The Tal Memorial blitz tournament started in the Main Media Center in Sochi. Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan) leads after the first half
On November 13th, 2014, while the participants of the World Championship enjoyed their day off, the Tal Memorial blitz tournament started in the V. Dvorkovich Saloon of the Main Media Center in Sochi. The participants of the two-day event with a $100,000 prize fund are 12 supergrandmasters – Vladimir Kramnik, Sergey Karjakin, Peter Svidler, Alexander Grischuk, Ian Nepomniachtchi, Evgeny Tomashevsky, Alexander Morozevich, Ernesto Inarkiev, Alexandra Kosteniuk (all – Russia), Boris Gelfand (Israel), Peter Leko (Hungary), and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov (Azerbaijan).
The time control is 4 minutes plus 2 seconds per move. If several players have the same number of points, additional indicators are applied in the following order: direct encounter; the number of wins, Koya, Sonneborn-Berger. Alexander Tkachiev is a Chief Arbiter. The tournament is initiated by Arkady Dvorkovich, the Russian Deputy Prime Minister and the Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the World Chess Championship match. On Thursday Mr. Dvorkovich visited the tournament, met the grandmasters, observed their games, and also examined the match organization at all levels.
Shakhriyar Mamedyarov developed a sprinter speed in the first half, scoring 10 out of 11. The winner of the recently finished Petrosian Memorial Alexander Grischuk is on the second place with 8 points. Alexander Morozevich is on the third place with 7 points. The rest of the standings: 4. Svidler 6.5, 5. Gelfand 5.5, 6-9. Kramnik, Tomashevsky, Karjakin, and Leko – all 5, 10. Inarkiev 4.5, 11. Nepomniachtchi 3.5, 12. Kosteniuk 1 point.

A blitz tournament among the journalists also took place on the day off. The prize fund was offered by the Russian Chess Federation. Vladimir Barsky, the chief editor of the RCF website, took the first place with the perfect score 8/8. Oksana Golubeva, the video broadcasting editor, took the second place. The third and fourth places were shared by Mark Glukhovsky, the chief editor of the 64-Chess Review and the Chairman of the RCF, and Goran Urosevic (Chessdom.com).
The World Chess Championship match between Magnus Carlsen (Norway) and Viswanathan Anand (India) is currently tied at 2-2. The fifth game is played on Friday, November 14th at 15:00. The Indian grandmaster has White.
