took more than 10 seconds! The obvious consideration is to give the opposing King room to avoid checkmate. But moving the Queen to give the King space just seems to give the King too many flight squares and without the support of her own King, there’s no quick mate possible. The solution,1. Kd1 as others have already pointed out, has delightful elements. It’s counterintuitive to let your opponent free his Queening square. Second, it uses zugzwang to solve the problem of how the Queen can move to give check while giving up watch over the flight squares on the h-file. Black’s only move, 1…Kf1 changes his flight squares for the worse, allowing White to mate with 2. Qe1
