NASSAU, Bahamas — In the House of Assembly Wednesday morning was the first Bahamian ever to win a gold medal performance in chess at the CAC Youth Festival held in San Jose, Costa Rica.

Nathan captured the gold medal for the Under- 8 division.

The nine-round tournament was held from December 11th through the 15th, 2013. More than 230 players from more than 16 Central American and Caribbean countries participated in this event.

Nathan, who is home schooled, is being described as a “chess phenom” because he only recently began playing chess about a year ago. Because of this victory, Nathan will receive an official invitation to the Pan-American Youth Festival in Mexico City, July 2014.

Most importantly, Nathan has also met the requirements for the Candidate Master (CM) title, which must first be approved by the World Chess Federation (FIDE).

No Bahamian has ever been awarded such a prestigious title.
