The fabled chess brainiacs at Edward R. Murrow High School in Brooklyn checkmated their rivals Sunday to win the state championship for an unprecedented 16th time.
Wiping out some 80 other teams from Buffalo to the Bronx, the budding Bobby Fischers of the Avenue L school qualified for the national championship, which begins April 4.
“Our goal is to win and then go to Washington to meet President Obama,” said 17-year-old, Nigeria-born Azeez Alade, a junior at the Midwood high school who has been playing chess since the second grade, when he could barely speak English.
It could happen: Murrow has won the national high school chess championship seven times, and last marched into the Oval Office to meet then-President George W. Bush after a triumph in 2007.
Individual state champ is not A.Ostrovskiy.
It does help when the school gets to choose its students.
Congrats! A. Ostrovskiy played the toughest opponents and tied for 1st.
Ostrovskiy, Colas and Black are Co-Champions; Colas is going to represent NY State at Denker.
Ostrovskiy is living next block from Murrow for the last 12 years; probably students get to choose school at first.
chess is awesome
Ostrovskiy played the toughest opponents and tied for first, then he should be the Denker rep.
