Chess: Carlsen praises Aronian ahead of upcoming Candidates Tournament

FIDE current number one player Magnus Carlsen sees Levon Aronian as his top rival at a Chess Candidates Tournament to be open in London later this week, according to The Guardian.

“He has supreme confidence and belief in himself, is very well prepared, can evaluate non-standard positions very well and never backs down,” said the Norwegian of the Armenian, who is now ranked third by international chess’s governing body.

Aronian and Carlsen square off in the opening round of the competition to be held in the British capital from March 15 to April 1.

The eight-player double round-robin tournament will decide challenger for the world chess crown to play against its current holder Viswanathan Anand from India later this year.
