Walnut St. West Chess Club at Museum of Art
Chess “cadets” from the Walnut St. West Library and their coach Joe Clarke were invited to play chess at the Philadelphia Museum of Art on December 30th in conjunction with the exhibit featuring works by Marcel Duchamp, who was an avid chess player in addition to being a major conceptual artist.

The children played on chess tables set up on the balcony of the second floor amid displays of chess sets designed by well known artists. They not only played each other, but also other museum visitors, both children and adults.

After playing for several hours, the children toured the exhibit, Dancing Around the Bride, in which there are numerous references to chess.

The Walnut Street West Library Chess Club is sponsored by Friends of Walnut Street West Library with special support this year from the The Gold Standard Restaurant, Talking Headz Hair Salon, Lee’s Deli and Vientiane Restaurant, and is co-sponsored by the After School Activities Partnership (ASAP), which runs programs in many public schools and libraries, including a city-wide chess league.
