Seminar “Chess in Schools: theory, implementation, experience” in Ukraine

On the 24th of December in Kiev the first all-Ukrainian round table Seminar “Chess in Schools: theory, implementation, experience” was held.

The Seminar was organized by the Chess Federation of Ukraine and the Ukrainian Charitable Foundation “Children’s Chess.”

The Seminar was attended by more than 60 leading experts from almost all regions of Ukraine. Among them – the famous chess coaches, experienced chess teachers, methodologists, heads of schools and chess clubs, authors of the best programs, textbooks and manuals on teaching chess.

The event began with a welcome speech of the president of the Chess Federation of Ukraine Viktor Kapustin. He spoke about the plans and prospects of implementation of the program “Chess in Schools” at the national level, and expressed hope that the current seminar will begin a new good tradition of regular meetings of chess professionals to share their experiences.

At the round table, the participants exchanged experiences and discussed the current problems of chess in Ukraine, raised a number of questions. Among the most serious problems identified: not enough chess inventory in schools, old infrastructure, lack of same for the whole country training program for chess, lack of professional coaches and lack of a formalized system of training.

According to Inna Romanova, associate professor of social pedagogy of Kharkiv National Pedagogical Institute, at present there is a real demand for professional chess coaches, and hence there is need to introduce a separate specialty in education departments – “The teacher or trainer of chess.”

The materials of the seminar will be available shortly at the official site of Ukrainian chess federation: http://ukrchess.org.ua
