A chess program for special kids ages 8-11 will be offered at the New Providence Municipal Center, Room G2, 360 Elkwood Avenue, Room G2. The class meets Saturdays noon-1 p.m. from Jan. 5 through Feb. 9 at the New Providence Municipal Center, Room G2, 360 Elkwood Avenue, Room G2.

The cost of the program is $100.

Beginners as well as experienced players are welcome. Chess can foster critical and creative thinking skills, build concentration and improve IQ scores and confidence. These benefits are particularly advantageous for kids with special needs. U.S. Chess Federation certified instructor Martin Kenny has more than 20 years experience teaching chess and has worked with special kids one-on-one and in small groups. He will provide an introduction to chess emphasizing the fundamentals of the game including becoming familiar with the different chess pieces, basic moves and strategy and good sportsmanship. Kenny will quickly assess each participant’s level and provide individualized instruction to advance every player’s skills.

Class size is limited. Students should be able to sit and participate in a classroom setting. Teen Peer mentors will be on site, as available from week to week, to assist the instructor and students.
