Partial credit for mate in 5?
Qc5+
This is a great one.
I know the solution from “Im Banne des Schachproblems” but I would never find it if I would not know it.
kinda too simple, isn’t it?
1. Ra2+ Qxa2
2. Qb4++
wait . . . in 4? WHY?
Here is my attempt:
1 Bxf5 Qa1
2 Qc5+ Kb3
3 Qb4+#
For 2 .. Ka4
3 Bc2+#
Are there better options for Black here?
Not so great, if solution is most unlikely move. That makes it too easy.
wait . . . in 4? WHY?
In the case of :
1. Ra2+ Qxa2
2. Qb4++ (ILLEGAL move)
the queen on c4 gets pinned!
OK,
Bxf5 Qxf5+
I missed the check part of Qxf5.
Thanks,
How about moving the king to protect the pawn again? Any checks peter out and if the q is gone it’s mate.
1. Kf8! … Qb2
if … Qb3
2.Qc5+ … Ka4
3.Ra2+ … Qa2
4.Qb4#
2. Qc5+ … Ka4
3. Rb2 …. any move
4. Qb4#
I will rearrange my previous post.
1. Kf8! …… Qb2
2. Qc5+ …… Ka4
3. Rxb2 …… any move
4. Qb4#
if:
1. ……….. Qb3
2. Qc5+ …… Ka4
3. Ra2 ……. Qxa2
4. Qb4#
1. Rd2+ Qxd2 2. Qb4# would be great except Qb4 is illegal. So the white king and queen on the same diagonal is a problem needing a remedy.
1. Kf8 (an un-checkable square seems like the best option)
1. .. Qb3 the only move that offers any kind of resitance
2. Qc5+
2. .. Ka4 (since if Qb4 and 3. Qxb4#)
3. Ra2+
if 3. .. Qxa2, 4. Qb4# or
if 3. .. Qa3+, 4. Rxa3#
1.Kf8? doesn’t work.
1…Qb2!
and White cannot checkmate in 4.
