It is kind of strange in chess that you fight for draw from even score to win the national championship. But just like last year when Kamsky held Shulman, Zatonskih successfully held Abrahamyan with draw odd black pieces to win the US Women’s Championship again. I believe Anna bid for 19 minutes and got black while Abrahamyan got 45 minutes in must win situation.
Congratulations to Anna and Tatev for surviving the grueling test in the past 2 weeks.
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Good for her!
Both Ladies played well…with nice wins with Black..Was surprised to see the time difference in the Armageddon game..but hey..it did not turn out to matter. Nice Steady hold with Black. I kept racking my Brains wondering what white could do to make her spend more time but it was a pretty simple hold. I think Due credit should be given to MrsAbrahamyan as well. A fitting End.
How come the official site and the USCF site aren’t updated properly? These should be the first sites to update their info.
So the organizer is encouraging decisive play with draw odd to win the championship? Brilliant!
Amazing comeback from Zatonskih! Congratulations! But Armageddon games still suck.
Time bidding Armageddon game is an absolute joke. It’s not serious chess.
I am tired of hearing critics after critics talking about the same thing.
The rules were set at the tournament, the players chose to play and so it was. The games cannot simply repeat what happened during the Kasparov/Karpov match. What is your solution?
After watching the games live, I am convinced that these women are fantastic chess players. Anna, like Judit are mothers with not enough time to practice chess. Yet, their skills have taken them far. I like Anna Zatonskih. At the cost of being sexist,I dare say she is so lady like.
After watching Tatev Abrahamyan play, I was reminded of Judit Polgar. All these women chess players are simply amazing and a breath of fresh air. The miracle save by Anna with a classic ending, the amazing resources to create tactics out of noting from Tatev will make some people who are quick to say how weak women chess is rather than seeing the positives think again. All these have been achieved by the amazing Polgar sisters and thus, have propelled women’s chess very far.
I won’t say no more, support women’s chess:
