Young Pinoy chesser wins gold in Malaysia tourney

MANILA, Philippines – A young Filipino chess player emerged as one of the individual champions in a tough age group in the 10th Malaysian Chess Festival in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last Tuesday.
The seven-year-old Alekhine Nouri, a grade one student at FEU-FERN, won his first five matches before drawing with India’s Ayush Pinakin Barot in the final round.
Nouri finished with 5.5 points in six outings to rule the 8-under category.
Malaysia’s Ryan Lee also finished with 5.5 points, but Nouri had a better tie-break point that allowed him to claim the gold medal.
Nouri earlier defeated Megat Zaid Megat Mohd Khushair, Alden Goh Kai Ray, Raynell Ng Li Hern, Shressh Amit Chembeti and Wong Zi Yue of Malaysia.
He is currently the youngest FIDE Master (FM) in the world.
In the Open division of the tournament, Filipino Grand Master (GM) Darwin Laylo beat countryman Franz Barretto to gain a share of fifth place with 4.5 points.
Also with 4.5 points were GM John Paul Gomez and FM Roderick Nava.
The country’s campaign in the Malaysia Chess Festival was supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines, the Philippine Olympic Committee, and the Philippine Sports Commission. — By Marlon Bernardino
