Cebuano chess player finishes 4th in Brunei

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino International Master (IM) Kim Steven Yap finished in a tie for 4th place on Thursday’s conclusion of the Brunei Campomanes Memorial Grandmaster Open Chess Championship 2012.

The Cebuano ace defeated compatriot IM Oliver Dimakiling in the 9th and final round using the advantageous white pieces to raise his total to 6.0 points on 4 wins, 1 loss and 4 draws.

Also with 6.0 points are Grandmasters (GMs) Tahir Vakhidov of Uzbekistan, Jha Sriram of India, Nguyen Anh Dung of Vietnam and Yeoh Li Tian of
Malaysia.

GM Marat Dzhumaev of Uzbekistan defeated former solo leader FM Pitra Andika of Indonesia in the final round to tally 6.5 points and bag the title.

He had higher tie break points over 2nd placer IM Jakhongir Vakhidov of Uzbekistan and 3rd placer FM Andika.

The $10,000 total pot prize event was held in honor of the late FIDE honorary president Florencio “Pocamps” Campomanes. – By Marlon Bernardino
