1966 Shelby Cobra Sells for $5.5 Million
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Jan. 21) – An 800-horsepower Shelby Cobra, once the personal car of the racing veteran who developed the iconic sports car, has sold for $5.5 million at auction, a record for an American car.
The sale of the 1966 Shelby Cobra “Super Snake” brought a packed house to its feet Saturday at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction after a pair of bidders drove the price up.
Carroll Shelby, 84, who created the Cobra in the ’60s using Ford engines and a British sport car chassis, said he built the Super Snake – with twin superchargers on a 427 cubic inch V-8 – and drove it for years.
“It’s a special car. It would do just over three seconds to 60 (mph), 40 years ago,” Shelby told the crowd before the sale.
“I killed a buzzard with it,” he said. “Nasty, nasty.”
The car had a twin, built for comedian Bill Cosby, but that car was destroyed in an accident while being driven by another owner, according to the Barrett-Jackson Web site.

Awesome, Suzi! Is there anything that you don’t write about? Your diversity alone is why you should be the official leadership of chess. The true beauty of life is the infinite manifestations that enrich the experience. Oh, and the great picture from Corus of Topalov looking upon Magnus from Kramnik’s side of the board is priceless. A great caption would be, “I look into the future and it is before me now!” Like Tal must have thought when he played a young Bobby. Welcome back and Keep The Faith! Namaste…JC

Would you pay $5.5 million for a car?
No.
Not even if I could afford it.
The function of a car to take me from point A to point B. Any car will do, which can safely do that.

I agree totally, Gabor.
It’s obscene.

http://www.veselintopalov.net/ states that the match will take place for sure!!!!!!!!!!! Yes!!!!!
I’m happy to see another match between Topalov and Kramnik
Gabor…anything man creates can have value beyond the lowest most basic intrinsic value. We value fine food for the experience of aroma and taste and not just for the caloric and nutriitional content. We value fashion not just because it provides cover and warmth. We value chess not just because it is some past time. So, there are people who love unusual cars like this…it isn’t for everybody and certainly in most people’s mind there are better ways of spending money but the same can be said of a variety of things which make up civilization.
I would pay maybe 1000 $ to rent this car for one week. Maybe its funny to drive, but i never would pay 5.5 mio $ to got this vehicle.
yk

I would buy 2 for $11 million. After all I need one to drive. The wife of course will grab the first one.
Money money. meaningless money. Glad I have none of that green paper laying around. Too busy playing chess.
Oh bye the way when the wife left me she said other men had money and she was off to bigger and better life. Gave me more time for chess. After all first things first.
Now where is that old monopoly set with all the money.
“It would do just over three seconds to 60 (mph), 40 years ago”
That is actually truly incredible. Very very few cars today can do that

I missed the auction. I had my $6 million in my cookie jar and was all set to bid on it. But then I really wanted a red one and decided to wait for a red one.
I wonder how much it would cost for insurance to leave it overnight out on the streets of New York. I hope they dont steal a hub cap.
Only 5.5 million. What a bargain.
Susan I want to see some chess sets go for a million. That will be the day.
Here is my super charged chess set. Has a 800 hp computer chip hidden in the king.
I remember when the cobra came out. I think it was super expensive at about $3,000. Damn what an investment return. Now it is cheap at 5.5 million.
This is just the news all us poor chess players love to read.
It is always the muscle cars that bring the big money and not the old rare cars. It has to be super fast. The faster the more expensive.
I wanna take my chevy with 200,000 miles and sell it in at that auction. Maybe he can get me more than $1,000,000 on the old super collectable. Just a little rust and a few dents. nothing major that you can not fix.

I wanna be obscene. LOL.
Susan to change the subject how about something on The Superbowl coming up in two weeks in Miami with The Chicago Bears vs The Indianapolis Colts? What is your prediction? Being from Chicago and being a Bears fan all my life its Da Bears!!!
Does it come in metallic green?
>>I’m happy to see another match between Topalov and Kramnik>>
Don’t hijack a thread to talk about a match that isn’t going to happen. There are plenty of threads for that.
>>What is your prediction? Being from Chicago and being a Bears fan all my life its Da Bears!!! >>
Why hijack a thread just to admit that your opinion on a completely different topic is completely colored by personal preference and therefore unreliable? Makes no sense.
anon “why hijack a thread” hmm you have quite a glossary of cyber world speak probably just like the 5 inch thick glasses geek that you are! The reason I hijacked this thread (at least it wasnt an airplane)! is because I happen to post here frequently and know Susan. She posts all interests and is none of your dam business.

Susan may like you, but you obviously don’t like her. At least you don’t share her values about keeping it civil and respectful; win with grace, lose with dignity, et cetera. You don’t share her value for honesty either. I made a criticism about thread topics, and you responded by fabricating data about a complete stranger. That’s dishonest, if you didn’t know. Now, do you want to stick to that and acquire a permanent reputation for dishonesty that will come back and bite you weeks and months down the line (I’ll see to it), or can you be mature enough to backtrack, or at least drop the whole thing?
As for the thread, if you’d said that I was out of line because every thread was an open one here, I might have bought that. But claiming that you have special priviliges that no on else does because you’re Susan’s friend is obviously doing her no favors. If she deinged to comment on this little set-to, I can almost guarantee she wouldn’t say that.

would I pay? If I was a billionaire no doubt.
5,000,0000 could feed a lot of people. I would not be able to sleep at night if i spent that much on a car.
Well I used to dibble and dabble into collecting. But never did very well at it. Today I do not have a desire to own some expensive collectable. But the car is definitely nice and it is fun to see it sell at such a high price.
800 Horsepower is a bit more than I need to go to the store. But then some people might be in a rush and the extra hp will certainly keep one ahead of the police cars chasing me down the highway.
Please do not argue with other Susan Polgar voters. We must learn to stick together in harmony.
The Shelby Cobra equipped with the 427 SOHC with an overhead camshaft to each head, this package was “The Corvette Eater”.
BTW, if I pay $5.5 million for a car, it’s one that I design from the ground-up and it not only drives…it flies.
Here’s a cool fast concept car:
