World University Chess Championship 2010

General Information

The International University Sports Federation (FISU) holds World University Championships in a number of disciplines, among them since 1990 also in chess. FISU grants the right to hold the championship to an organizer in a country whose University Sports Federation is a member of FISU. In 2006 the World University Chess Championship was held in Nigeria; in 2008 it was held in Russia. FISU has awarded the championship for 2010 to the Swiss University Sports Federation (SHSV) to be held in Zurich.

According to the regulations of FISU, the World University Chess Championship is held in two individual tournaments for men and women, lasting for nine to eleven rounds in seven days. Based on the results of the individual competitions a team ranking is also computed. World University Championships in Switzerland regularly attract numerous entries; up to 150 competitors from 25 countries are expected. They will be accompanied by approximately 30 delegates and coaches.

The Swiss University Sports Federation (SHSV) coordinates university sports in Switzerland. One of its members is the Academic Sport Federation Zurich (ASVZ) which has a chess section in the Academic Chess Club Réti (ASK Réti). The ASK Réti was founded in 1961 and is one of the largest chess clubs in Zurich. New members are predominantly recruited among the students, teachers, researchers and staff of these institutions.

Under the auspices and with support of the SHSV and the ASVZ the ASK Réti has taken responsibility for organizing the World University Chess Championship 2010. An organizing committee has been formed in which both the Swiss and the Zurich University Sports Federations have taken seats.

The ASK Réti will provide volunteers for this event. Qualified personnel necessary for conducting a tournament of this importance is available, including FIDE arbiters and experienced tournament directors. Adequate accommodation of the competitors and officials will be guaranteed. The necessary equipment (chessboards and men, clocks, display boards, software, tournament bulletin production etc.) is available. The organizing committee also provides an office both in the preliminary phase and during the actual competition.

Applications

Participants are entered by their national university sports federation. If you are interested in playing, but your university sports federation does not usually send players to World University Chess Championships, you may also try to contact your national chess federation. If you are interested in playing but cannot establish contact with either of the two, please use our contact form and we shall try to help you find the right contact for you in your country.

Rules and Regulations

From the FISU page on the World University Chess Championship 2010:

Events

One (1) Men’s tournament
One (1) Women’s tournament
Team classification will be established jointly for the men and the women.

Participation

Each country may enter a maximum of 8 competitors: Maximum five (5) men and three (3) women, or five (5) women and three (3) men, or four (4) women and four (4) men Only the countries with three (3) competitors or more, of whom at least one (1) men and one (1) women, will be taken into account for the team classification. The individual classification will be established according to the total of game scored points. In case of a tie, the winner will be determined according to the FIDE rules and the Chess Tournament rules for this Championship The team classification will be determined according to the total of game points scored, in the individual tournament, by the three (3) best scored from at least one (1) man and one (1) woman from the same country. If the number of men is equal or more than 1.5 times the number of women, the team classification will be done with the best results of two (2) men and one (1) woman. Similarly, if the number of women is equal or more than 1.5 times the number of men, the team classification will be done with the best results of two (2) women and one (1) man. In the event of a tie, the winning team will be determined according to FIDE rules.

Delegation

Each country is authorised to enter a maximum of thirteen (13) persons of which eight (8) may be competitors and five (5) officials.

Age brackets

The competitors must be born between January 1st, 1982 and December 31st, 1992.
