Well, saw it in about 5 seconds, but took longer to be sure it wins:
1. Qg7 Qg7
2. Rg7
The two white pawns on h6 and e6, along with the black h7 pawn, create wall on the seventh rank which allows white to threaten mate by moving the rook over to the left (where depends on what black does. If black pushes the d-pawn, then white plays Rc7 (so the new queen won’t guard the mating square), and if black pushes the c-pawn, then Rb7 is played- in either case, white will mate after black exhausts the blocks on the back rank with a new queen and finally the bishop at e8. The only other defense I see is
2. …..Be8
3. Re7 and there is nothing black can do.
Win. Qg7+ Qxg7 and Rxg7 after there is forced mate in a few moves with Rb7 for example.
White wins with:
1. Qg7+! Qxg7 2. Rxg7 Be8!
( 2… d2? 3. Rb7 d1=Q 4. Rb8+ Qd8 5. Rxd8 Be8 6. Rxe8#)
3. Re7!
( 3. Rb7? Kg8! 4. Rb8 Kf8 5. e7+ Kxe7 6. Rb7+ Bd7 and black pawns will promote -+)
3… Bh5
{ 3…Bf7 4. exf7! (not 4. Rb8+? Bg8! -+) d2 5. Rb8# }
4. Rb7 Be8 5. Rb8 Kg8 Rxe8#
Marcelo
White should win this one. After
1.Qg7+ Qxg7 2.Rxg7
Black is too vulnerable to the threat of back rank mate to have time to do anything although he can delay mate for a couple moves.
For example,
2.-d2 3.Rc7 Bd7 4.Rxd7 d1=Q 5.Rxd1 c2 6.Rd8++
2.-Be8 3.Re7 Bb5 4.Rc7 Ba6 5.Rd7 Bb5 6.Rd8+ Be8 7.Rxe8++
Once you realize that the closest square available to Black’s K on other than the 8th rank is e7, the solution is easy.
1. Qg7+ Q:g7
2. R:g7 and White’s R will harass the black B until it has a chance to get to the 8th rank for the coup de grace.
1. Qg7+ Qxg7 (forced)
2. hxg7+ Kg8
3. e7 1-0
What is wrong with this?
It doesn’t win. The bishop prevents the e pawn from going to e8.
3. E7. D2
@Anant: it’s wrong cause the king blocks the g-pawn and the B controls e8, so no threats at all. Black can just push his own pawns.
I think e7 should be played immidately. Whatever black does, mate follows.
1. Qg7+ Qxg7
2. Rxg7 1-0
Black cannot escape back rank mate
I think Anant is close to solution, but with 2 Rxg7 instead. The King is trapped and after 2….,c7/d7 3 Rb7! and i think black is lost.
1.Qg7+ Qxg7 2.Rxg7 c2 3.Rc7 c1:q 3.Rxc1 d2 4.Rc8+ wins
Qg7+, Qxg7, Rxg7, Be8 (c7/d7 fails to Rb7), Rf7 (threatening Rf8#) and now A: Bxf7, exf7 and mate follows or B: Kg8, Rg7+, Kh8 (if Kf8, e7#), Rf7, Kg8, Rg7+…DRAW.
I think this is a draw.
@Anant:
e8 is not possible due to Bxe8 &
there is no defense to d2, c2, etc.
That is what is wrong 🙂
Solution I see is:
1. Qxg7+ Qxg7
2. Rxg7! and White mates quickly
There is no stopping R*7 followed by R*8+ checkmate
1. Qg7+ Qxg7 2. Rxg7, and now:
2…c2/d2 3. Rb7 and 4. Rb8+ etc
2…Be8 3. Re7 Bc6 4. Rc7, and black has nothing against 5. Rc8+ followed by mate.
I notice that e and h pawns control fields g7 and f7 keeping black K stuck in 8th rank.
So it takes me 5 seconds to find:
1. Qg7+ Qxg7 (forced)
2. Rxg7! d2/c2
3. Re7!! Kg8/d1=Q/c1=Q or any
4. Re8#
Also 3. Ra1 and Ra8 (what I actually saw first) would work equally fine, just a few moves slower.
Nice idea and win for white:)
1. Qg7+ Qxg7 (forced)
2. Rg7 Ba6
3. Rd7 Bb5
4. Rb8+ Be8
5. Rxe8#
or
1. Qg7+ Qxg7 (forced)
2. Rg7 d2
3. Rb7 d1=Q
4. Rb8+ Qd8
5. RxQd8+ Be8
6. RxBe8#
White wins, capturing with the rook and using black first rank problems does the trick. The attempt to be “tricky” with 1. e7? first fails after 1. … Qf7 and the pawn on e7 interferes with the rook after: 1. e7 Qe7 2. Qg7+ Qxg7 3. Rxg7 Be8. So the correct move order is:
1. Qg7+ Qxg7
2. Rxg7 (threatening Rb7) Be8 (if 2. … c2/d2 white follows with Rb7)
3. Re7 Bh5
4. Rb7/a7 followed by Rb8/a8.
I think white can get a draw by
1.Qf3!
if 1…Qxh6+ 2.Kg1 black has to play 2…Qc1+ 3.Kh2 Qh6+ etc otherwise white’s Q goes to a8.
0-0-0

How about Qh5 – Qf7? It wins faster than the black pawn can queen.
1. Qg7+ Qxg7
2. Rxg7 (Than Back Rank Mate).
1. Qg7+ Qxg7
2. Rxg7 (Than Back Rank Mate).
