7. your vote!
There are all mediocre, the USA is not a strong nation in chess.
The players you mention … their names don’t sound very ‘American’, do they? 🙂
I tend to agree with the previous post. Not necessarily mediocre but the fact that most of their top players are imports says something about the state of chess in the US. Hope you can change that.
To answer your question, I think Nakamura is, if not the best, at least the one with the most potential.
And you’re too modest to include yourself but I think you would certainly make the top 7 🙂
what about you, Susan ? Other than Kamsky, I dont have too high an opinion about the other players who seem to do fine in US tournaments, but get trounced at the world level. After Kamsky, I will consider you as the best player.
1. Kamsky
2.-3. Nakamura, Susan
4. Gulko( considering his past record specially against kasparov)
5. Kaidanov
6. Onischuk
7. Ibragimov
Gata Kamsky is the best and the World Cup has clearly shown where he stands and where Nakamura stands.
1. Nakamura
2. Kamsky
3. Onischuk
4. Kaidanov
5. Polgar
6.Ibragimov
7. Gulko
1. Kamsky
2. Nakamura, Susan
3. Onischuk
4. Gulko
5. Kaidanov
6. Ibragimov
I dont believe any of these people were born in America. Nakamura comes the closest. He came here at a very young age.
The question might be.
What strong chess players have been attracted to come to the USA.
Susan is the best hope for a native born person to rise up and do well in chess.
I hope Nakamura continues to do well. I am not discouraged by his world cup performance.
I continue to cheer for Kamsky.
I will always cheer for all chess players playing on the American team.
I was even cheering for Bruzon from Cuba and all those from South America and Canada.
by the end of the tournament I was cheering for Topalov to win. Although I continued to cheer for Judit right up to now. and for Anand.
I plan on cheering for Susan in the US Championships next month. that will be fun.
I feel very grateful for all the wonderful chess recently on the internet live. it is wonderful. I enjoy it all.
Reading Susan’s blog yesterday I felt how wonderful it would have been if I could have been introduced to chess in school at a young age.
tommy
All of them are native-born, including Susan, just not in the US.
I know this is off-topic but it looks like somebody is trying to auction Bobby Fischer’s confiscated stuff on eBay:

Kamsky he’s number one !
Kamsky
>And you’re too modest to include yourself
Yes, Susan is so modest, so talented and so attractive but still so much searching for recognition.
I bet something did go wrong in her youth.
Poor, poor Susan.
So who is the strongest American born player currently active? ( dont say bf 🙂 )
(bf)? Bloody Fritz? 🙂
Switch Nakamura and Kamsky and I like your list. The results of the US Championship says it all. One bad result (the World Cup) does not make or break a career. Nakamura plays creative chess and his games are always interesting. He is ready for another growth spurt. Having said that I am happy that Kamsky is back in chess. I hope Gata uses his experience to finish in the top 10 and go on to the candidates.
1. Kamsky
2. Nakamura
3. Onischuk
4. Ilbragimov
5. Kaidanov
6. Gulko
7. Akobian
8. Shabalov
9. Goldin
10.Ivanov
Top 10 seems more appropiate, although it gets really jumbled after the first 7. if the top 6 are selected and able to participate in torino, usa will have a solid team.
Kamsky, obviously.
It’s a shame there are no natural-born Americans good enough to be under consideration for the list. I wonder why that is? Maybe I’ll be able to figure it out later on while I’m watching TV or playing video games.

1-2 Kamsky, Nakamura
3 Onischuk
4 Ibragimov
5 Akobian
6 Kaidanov
Kamsky and Nakamura are clearly, IMHO, a step above all other Americans. With Kamsky getting more and more into playing shape it is harder to say who is number one between him and Nakamura. Ibragimov seems to be playing well lately, Akobian is still rising, and Onishuck was clear #1 before the rise of Nakamura and return of Kamsky. I fear that Kaidanov and Gulko are a bit too old to compete effectively against the rest, and it seems like Gulko has not been too active lately.
Americans doesn’t have their own identity anymore becaue its a immigrant country. Even if they are born here, they have some kind of mix blood flowing through them (mix of different europians, african, asian origin people). So why search for pure americans?
Nakamura and kamsky are as american as the people who are born here.
Nakamura is setting a new ICC record.Longest login time.:)
Of those named, our good friend Boris Gulko.
