ChessBase just ran an article about its server with some very interesting numbers:
– About 20,000 players log in during any 24-hour period and they play around 200,000 games.
– Since the server was launched in September 2001, the total number of games played on the server has reached 158,358,452 (as of Sunday, September 17, 2006)
Top 10 countries playing chess on the server:
1. Germany 2. USA 3. France 4. Italy 5. Spain 6. Netherlands 7. Austria 8. England 9. Turkey 10.Switzerland
Congratulations to Frederic and the ChessBase team! That’s the kind of numbers chess players like to see! Click here to visit ChessBase.
Dear Susan,
I’m a little surprised to see you endorsing Chessbase. They seem to go out of their way to include articles that are not suitable for children and which are rather degrading to women’s chess in general.
Susan merely stated the facts. I play on ICC but it’s nice to see many good chess servers.
I see no endorsement from Susan. She’s bringing us the chess news.
ICC has very few pictures of persons being spray-painted.
Susan,
Sadly chess is still not popular in the States 🙁
We all know that. USA maybe the second on the top 10 countries but if you compared on a per-area basis, then US wouldn’t be on top. Many countries in Europe and even India would be on top.
I guess we need a couple of hundred more Susan Polgars to make chess really really popular.

I agree with you. Do you know how to clone a couple hundred of me? 🙂
Best wishes,
