bd5?
1) Bd5!!, …;
Ciao
Luigi
Mabye
1.Bd5 Rxd5
2.Nxd3 when the c7 pawn can’t be stopped
If
1…d2+
then Kxc2 looks good
1. Bd5! (stops Rc6) Rxd5
2. Nxd3! (stops Rc5 and promotes c8 next)
(I’ve tried 1. Nxd3 which fails to Rxd3! 2. c8=Q Rd1+ 3. Kxc2 Rc1+ 4. Kxc1 draw)
Maybe it’s better if I post the entire line… but I supposed it was pretty clear that White cannot go to Queen the pawn immediately because of:
1) c8=Q, d2+;
2) Kxc2, d1=Q+;
3) Nxd1, Rc6+
and the white cannot capture the Rook because of stalemate!
So the right line is
1) Bd5 (protect the pawn), d2+;
2) Kxc2, d1=Q+;
3) Kxd1, Rxd5+;
4) Nd3, Rxd3;
5) Kc2, Rd4;
6) c8=R!!, not Queen because of Rc4+ and then stalemate again!

I like
BA4
Great analysis by Anon 10:30:00 AM CDT.
Thanks.
“Great analysis by Anon 10:30:00 AM CDT.
Thanks.”
Thatsa not an Anon!
Thatsa my broth-ah Luigi!
If you know Saavedra it´s easy!
Anon 10:30 is right against Rc4! promote Rook. But there are more variations like:
1.Bd5 d2+ 2.Kxc2 d1Q+ 3.Nxd1 Rd7!!
I didn’t see Luigi’s full line, but I did think that Ba4 was sufficient. Can anyone show how Black can draw after 1.Ba4?
Black can’t save himself by queening the d-pawn and then 3…Rc6+ because the White bishop no longer prevents 4…Ka2.
If Black goes on the attack with something like this…
1. Ba4 Rg6
2. c8Q Rg1+
3. Kd2 c1Q+
4. Qxc1+ Rxc1
5. Kxc1
…and White has enough material to force mate, correct?

The anonymous commenter at 10:30 has a good analysis up to the end, but c8(R) doesn’t win that I can see, but only draws.
Actually I just realized bd5 doesn’t win but Ba4 wins.
Bd5 rd8! draws.
c8=R wins:
It´s all here
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saavedra_position
Ba4 is draw:
1…Rd4! 2. c8Q d2+ 3. Kxc2 d1Q+ 3. Nxd1 Rc4+ =
if 2. c8R Rxa4 etc…
if 2. Bb5 d2+ 3. Kxc2 d1Q+ 3. Nxd1 and Rc4+ again
For Anon that post: “Actually I just realized bd5 doesn’t win but Ba4 wins.
Bd5 rd8! draws”
Bd5, Rd8;
cxd8=Q, d2+;
Kxc2, d1=Q;
Kxd1, this is not a draw.
