I hope e4 🙂
Unless Topalov has an answer to the Berlin Defense (Ruy Lopez) or the Petroff’s defense, I would stick with 1.d4. According to my database Topalov has defeated Kramnik with White when:
(a) Kramnik played a Sicilian defense;(b)Kramnik played a King’s Indian Defense;(c)Kramnik played a Queen’s Gambit Declined and when
(d)Kramnik played a Nimzo-Indian Defense.
Topalov has said he wanted to play a match of Fischer Random with Bobby Fischer at some point. I think he needs to talk with Bobby who also was down 0-2 vs Spassky, not only for moral and pyschological support but also for strategy of how to play and beat the defensive Kramnik, reminiscant of ex World Champion Petrosian who Fischer beat in the candidates matches rather impressively.
I hope 1. g4 and Black would have a hard time castling queen-side, and if Black castles king-side, then white is poised for an attack with the g-pawn.
Or 1. c4 and hope Kramnik plays 1…e5 so that Topalov gets to play a Sicilian with an extra move!
is it too far fetched a notion to recommend 1.e4 and the King Gambit if Kramnik plays 1..e5.
Topalov needs to take some risks. As long as he doesn’t repeat the line, gambits maybe a good way to go.
