University students, employees to help St. Louis and Webster Groves communities celebrate the FourthST. LOUIS, JULY 3, 2013 – In recognition of Independence Day this July 4th weekend, Webster University is again a major part of two of the largest holiday celebrations in the metropolitan St. Louis region.

In its home community of Webster Groves, where Webster University was founded in 1915, the University continues its tradition as a gold sponsor of Webster Groves Community Days July 3-6. The four-day festival features daily family activities including a parade, carnival ride and fireworks display on the night of the Thursday, July 4.

The University will again have a float in the Community Days parade on July 4, featuring its national collegiate champion chess team and NCAA regional champion baseball team. Webster’s parade presence will also honor the two teams’ award-winning coaches of the year, chess coach Susan Polgar and baseball coach Bill Kurich.

In addition to the baseball and chess players and coaches, more than 20 members of the University community will walk in the parade alongside the floats.

As in 2012, Webster will present the “Salute to the Troops” event on Friday, July 5 on the mainstage under the iconic Gateway Arch.

As part of that event, Webster University’s Brig. Gen. Michael Callan, associate vice president for Military & Government Programs, will address the veterans and active duty troops honored that night. He will warm up the crowd with this one-minute “Webster Salutes the Troops” video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fx4pzXG4Al4), highlighting Webster’s history of providing high quality and cost-effective undergraduate and graduate programs to military personnel throughout the world for the past 40 years.
