Nc5!
Here is my attempt
Be5 Bxe2
Bxf6 gxf6
Qxe8
Be5 Re6
Bxf6 gxf6
Rxe6 Bxe6
Qxf6 Kg8
Qe8
sorry if there are mistakes, I should be working!! and it’s 3am
🙂
Ah I missed Nc5 – what is the continuation after Qxc5?
I don’t even have a chess board here let alone a computer and my mind is painfully slow today . . and clients keep calling!!
I keep getting as far as
Nc5 Qxc5
Rxe8 Bg8 – – then interruptions
help 🙂
I’m not sure Qxc5 is better than Rxe2.
1. Ng7!
1… Rg7 2. Re8 +-
1… Re2 2. Qf6 Rg7 (2…Kg8 3. Nf5 +-) 3. Qf8 Rg8 4. Qh6 #
Still, the best move after Nxg7 would be Rxe2, not Rxg7.
i would have played 1. nf8. 1…Rxf8 (i do not see a better option because if Red8 Nh7 will bust the position) 2. Re7 threatening mate Rxe7 3. dxe7 Re8 4. Be5 and i do not see a defense to Bxe5 and Qh7 mate
oh wow i was doing this in my mind and totally forgot that bishop was on c4…….so im gonna try again.
I need a toilet break – maybe all will become clear when i return to my desk
🙂
ok same idea to try to decoy the knight from f6. 1. Nc5 attacking both rook if 1…Rxe2 Nxd7 if 1…Qxc5 2. Rxe8 Bg8 3. Be5 should win with Bxf6 and Qxh6 looming. and if 1…Bf7 2. Nxd7 Bxg6 3. Nxb6 Bxb1 or (Rxe2 Bxg6 Rxb2 Be1 to keep rook off d2 then Bc3) 4. Rxe8 Nxe8 5.d7! and the pawn queens.
Bf5
If I had this position against Vladimir Kramnik, I would play 1. Nf8, fully expecting 1 … Ne4?? 2. Qh7# :).
Other anon, after 1 Nxg7 Rxg7 2. Qxf6 Rxe2 3. Qf8+ Bg8 seems winning for Black.
trefor: After 1. Be5 Rxe6 2. Bxf6 Black has 2 … Qxd6+ 3. Kg1 gxf6, e.g. 4. Qxh6+ Kg8 5. Qg6+ Rg7
So, Nc5 by process of elimination :).
I suppose in a game, I would play Q*e8 N*e8 Nf8 with many threats
1.Nc5 Rxe2 2.Nxd7 Nxd7
[2…Qd8 3.Nxf6 Bg8 4.Nxg8 Qxg8 5.d7 Rd2 6.Qg6 Rxd7 7.Be5 and Qxh6
2…Qb5 3.Nxf6 Qxf5 4.Bxf5 gxf6 5.d7 Rd2 6.Bc7 win ] 3.Qh7# like Deep Frit- Kramnick round 2
I didn’t get it, sorry. Susan, we can miss engines to try to solve your puzzle, but we have to use them in order to control our solutions, as you never give them, as far as I know;-)
I thought in my mind 1. Nxg7 Rxe2 2. Qxf6 Rxg7 3. Qf8+ Rg8 4. Qh6 mate, but I see now that Black can defend by 3. Qf8+ Bg8 and proceed to win. Perhaps white can achieve a draw in this line by playing 1. Nxg7 Rxe2 2. Qxh6+ Kg8 3. Nf5! Rf7.
The solution is 1. Nc5!! (only move), Rxe2 2. Nxd7 and wins. If 1… Qxc5 (as someone suggested), 2. Rxe8+ Bg8 3. Be5 and white wins.

haha fabien yeah. too bad nf8 didnt work cuz then it woulda been exactly like deep fritz vs kramnik game 2
Be careful, after 1. Nc5 black plays 1. … Rde7, which is slightly better than 1. … Rxe2.
In any case, I don’t see something more accurate, so I also think 1. Nc5 is in the right path.
Anon who wrote 1. Nxg7 Rxe2 2. Qxf6, you miss 2. … QxQ,
Hehe, I miss d6 pawn on my board! Forget my answers.
Nc5 Qxc5 Re8 Bg8 Be5 Nxe8 … and black defends, because h7 is guarded by the Bg8
Django
Nc5 Qxc5 Re8 Bg8 Be5 Nxe8 and black defends, because the Bg8 guards h7
I looked at this line:
Nxg7 Rxe2 Qxf6 Rxg7 Qf8 Bg8 d7 (promotion almost) Rd2 (to stop it) Be5 … and white wins
Dango
yes, latest anonymous, apart from the tiny problem of Qxh6 and mate next
Ah yes i see now very nice
Django
Qe8
Be5! Threatening to gobble up the knight. That Knight is the key to blacks defense.
Ng4!!
Without any doubt 1.nc5! is the “magic move”
1.nc5! rxe2
(1…qxc5
2.rxe8+ bg8
3.be5 qd5
i)3…qc1 4.bxf6 qf4+ 5.kh3 +-
ii)3…ng4+ 4.fxg4 qxe5+ 5.rxe5+-
4.bxf6 qxd6+
5.g3 qd2+
6.kh3 +-)
2.nxd7 qd8
3.nxf6 bg8 (3…qxf6 4.qh7#)
4.nxg8 qxg8
5.d7 rd2
6.be5 +-
Nc5 wins.
Black has to take rook on e2, then Nxd7 (with the plan Nxf6).

I believe white Ng6 threatens mate on h7. black kg8 or Pxg6. white Rxe8 black Nxe8. white Qe8 mate. ive studied similar problems on shredder puzzles.
i correct a mistake it should be Ng5 threatens mate on h7. black kg8 or Pxg5. white Rxe8 black Nxe8. white Qe8 mate. that was a spelling mistake.
