UTB-TSC chess places eighth at national tournament

By VICTORIA MANNINGThe Brownsville HeraldThe University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College chess team on Saturday placed in the top 10 at the Pan-American Chess Championships in Washington, D.C.

Eight players from UTB participated in the four-day tournament at the Renaissance Hotel in games lasting up to five hours.“I have just gotten a call from one of our vice presidents, Dr. (Hilda) Silva, who informed me that the team placed eighth,” UTB-TSC President Juliet Garcia said.

Garcia said this is the chess team’s first appearance at the Pan-American tournament, and they are pleased with the results.

“All the nations Ivy League schools were there,” she said. “We came in between Yale and Harvard, and there were 24 schools competing.”
