The Brownsville Herald
Both chess teams representing the University of Texas at Brownsville / Texas Southmost College earned two out of three possible match points in competition Thursday and Friday at the Pan American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship.

In round one Thursday at Princeton University, the UTB/TSC “A” team defeated Miami Dade College, 4-0, as Mauricio Flores, Axel Bachmann, Max Cornejo and Katerina Namcova won their games. The UTB/TSC “B” team earned a victory over Lindenwood by a 3-1 score with Luciana Morales, Daniela De la Parra and Jeffrey Serna claiming individual victories.

The “A” team representing UTB/TSC won its second round match Friday versus Harvard, 3.5 to 0.5, but the Texas Tech “B” team defeated the UTB/TSC “B” team, 4-0. Second round winners for the “A” team included Flores, Bachmann, and Cornejo with a draw going to Nemcova.

Then, the two teams from Brownsville reversed roles in the third round Friday as the “A” team lost to Webster University, 2.5 to 1.5, and the “B” team defeated Washington University, 2.5 to 1.5.

“The competition is very strong this year,” said Morales, who planned to review and analyze her loss in the third round. The fourth round for UTB/TSC was scheduled to start at 10 a.m. today.

“I’ll pretty much forget about the loss before my next match,” she said.

Russell Harwood, chess program director, said the “A” team played a close, hard-fought match versus Webster, which was the top-seeded team entering the tournament.

The top four finishers at Princeton will advance to the 2012 President’s Cup, known as the Final Four of College Chess.
