#15 France – #5 USA (Women)
France offers the strongest line up – I. Krush is sitting out this round for the US
4.1 IM Skripchenko Almira 2423 – WGM Zatonskih Anna 2433
4.2 WGM Leconte Maria 2345 – WGM Goletiani Rusudan 2371
4.3 WGM Milliet Sophie 2330 – WGM Baginskaite Camilla 2299
#5 France – #7 USA (Overall)
Both teams put their top players
2.1 GM Bacrot Etienne 2708 – GM Kamsky Gata 2671
2.2 GM Lautier Joel 2682 – GM Onischuk Alexander 2650
2.3 GM Fressinet Laurent 2633 – GM Nakamura Hikaru 2664
2.4 GM Bauer Christian 2638 – GM Ibragimov Ildar 2637
I just landed at LAX and do not have the details but I was informed that USA tied France 2-2 and 1.5-1.5 in both matches! That means that both US teams are falling further back from the medal race.
Update: Bacrot defeated Kamsky and Ibragimov defeated Bauer. Onischuk and Nakamura both drew. On the women side, Goletiani won, Baginskaite lost and Zatonskih drew Skripchenko.
Russian men’s team defeated Ukraine 3-1. Armenia defeated China 2.5-1.5. The Russian women defeated Bulgaria 2-1 (Kosteniuk lost to Stefanova while the Kosintseva sisters carried Russia again. What a performance by Tatiana Kosintseva!). Ukraine women defeated Georgia 2-1 to maintain the 1/2 point lead.
What else can I say, except
GO USA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Go USA? The players on the USA team dosen’t even speak english. They speak russian. SO GO RUSSIA 2 I think is more like it
These players love USA, you joker. They went away from Russia to a country which welcomes all. USA is opening it’s arms to all nationalities and all sports.
USCF should learn some russian, anyway. Didn’t Bobby, too?
At least 1% of US citizens don’t speak english, so what? They will learn. If the are too old, their children will learn.
Does Nakamura speak Russian?
besides, Almira Skripchenko on the french side sounds most of all french to me :-))
the german grumbler, Vohaul
Bobby who? You mean the American-born Icelandic chess player?
The U.S. is most definitely still in medal contention. On points, they are tied for fourth with Russia and Ukraine. However, they are playing 3rd-place France today, and have yet to face 1st-place Armenia or co-4th Russia & Ukraine, so the opportunity is clearly there.
As Mig Greengard points out on his blog, China’s 4-0 whitewash of George yesterday — which propelled them into 2nd place — demonstrates that the standings can change in a hurry if a team gets hot.

Europeans make book on chess events routinely. In America, practically never. It’s not a matter of promotion; it reflects the general level of public interest.
France-USA 1.5 -1.5
Nakamura draws a two pawn down endgame…USA 2 France 2. Women drew France 1.5-1.5. Very tough matches, indeed!
I would repeat this again..US teams have lost their medal hopes in 9th round only….
US gets russia tomorrow probably.
If they survive, then they’ll probably have to play armenia the following day. I think China is sitting very nicely to take what the russians and armenians don’t take.
“As Mig Greengard points out on his blog,”
Who is Mig Greengard?
I would like to know what is the French comment on the match results.
“China’s 4-0 whitewash of George yesterday”
Well of course, a whole country against one guy, what do you expect?

I imaging the french are upset after letting 2 won games go by the wayside. Nakamura ended up drawing being 2 pawns down while Bauer blundered into a mating net against Ibragimov after getting into a winning position himself.
