The 2012 North Carolina Open is registering chess players of all levels, to compete for cash prizes totaling $13,000. The Aug. 31-Sept. 2 event will be held at the Embassy Suites, 204 Centrepoint Drive, Greensboro.

Just what to watch great games? The U.S. Masters Chess Tournament will also be staged at the hotel Aug. 30-Sept. 3. And High Point University will hold a “chess simultaneous” event Aug. 29 at the university’s Plato Wilson School of Commerce: World chess grandmaster Giorgi Magvelashvili of the Republic of Georgia will play against 20 players simultaneously.
