CORPUS CHRISTI (Kiii News) – Dan Deleon joins Katy Kiser on 3 News First Edition to discuss a University Interscholastic League (UIL) chess event.
Deleon’s 2 children will be involved in the chess event called “Chess Puzzle Solving” in which they will do 30 puzzles in 30 minutes. Ties are decided by who has the fastest time.
Texas Tech (SPICE) and the Susan Polgar Foundation invited Central Catholic Elementary School, who is the host of the region 7 and UIL champion ship, to join the event so they can gather data and try to admit the school into the UIL competition.
Deleon says this is important because if they are admitted, they will have access to other UIL events such as poetry, reading, and science. These events will also be available to all schools in Texas, private and public.
Deleon feels it’s important to teach chess in school because it helps to develop critical thinking skills, problem solving, and pattern recognition which will help students through out their lives.
