Uganda Chess Federation’s (UCF) newly elected president Emmanuel Mwaka has vowed to revamp the local sport in a bid to make it more competitive internationally.

Mwaka defeated Stephen Kisuze after he garnered 36 on 23 votes to replace Vianney Luggya on a four year term during an elective assembly held over the weekend at Lugogo.

But Mwaka and his team will have to first part with 10,000 dollars (about sh36m) to clear the debt with the international body FIDE and National Council of Sports.

“I think the old executive has done a great service to the federation however I have noticed the need to solve a few financial issues left behind by the outgoing committee,” Mwaka told New Vision.

With just a day in power, Mwaka also promised to increase the numbers of chess clubs in addition to the current 39 clubs playing in the national league.

“We plan to work closely with the outgoing president Vianney Luggya who happens to be the president of the Zone 4.2 to help us lobby for more tournaments both at local and international level,” he added.

Meanwhile, apart from national coach Joakim Okoth and director development Olga Namwanje who were unopposed, the rest of the contenders had to do a lot of convincing to secure their votes.

Isaac Otim was elected as vice president. He beat Queen of Katwe’s Robert Katende who only managed to gather 14 votes out of 60 voters.
