UTD 12.5; UB 3.5 IN TRANSATLANTIC CUP MATCH

Written by Alexey W. Root on Fri, Oct 31 2008 (22:57)

On Halloween The University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) defeated the University of Belgrade (UB) 12.5 to 3.5 in the third annual Transatlantic Cup match. The match started late, because University of Belgrade had already switched to standard time. So 12:30 p.m. Central Standard Time (CST, i.e. UTD time) was perceived to be 11:30 a.m. by UB. Nevertheless, dignitaries were present at both UTD (such as Undergraduate Dean Michael Coleman) and at UB (GM Svetozar Gligoric) to make ceremonial opening moves for the 16-board match by 1:15 p.m. CST. Games were played via the Internet Chess Club. To view the games, log in to your account and type “fi UTDUB”. Several of my current and former students spectated at, or played in, the chess match today.

Special thanks to Dr. Root for sharing the information with us. Congrats to UTD!
