NORMAL — The 26th annual Bloomington-Normal Martin Luther King Jr. Day Chess Tournament, sponsored by the Bloomington Normal Area Scholastic Chess Organization, will be Jan. 21.

K-8 students will play in four divisions, with 92 team and individual trophies at stake. The MLK Cup goes to the overall K-5 team.

The tournament was originally organized by Garrett Scott, a long-time teacher in Bloomington. “He has dedicated a great deal of his life to promoting chess in the community school,” said chess group spokesman Mark Nibbelin.

In past years, the tournament has drawn more than 400 players. Last year, there were 260 players, Nibbelin said.

Past players are welcome to help as tournament proctors,” he said.

Other upcoming events include the Tri-Valley Scholastic Chess Tournament on Jan. 12 at Tri-Valley Middle School in Downs and the K-8 state chess championships March 9-10 at Bone Student Center, Illinois State University.
