GM Eugene Torre promotes 1st Open Chess Tournament in Tuguegarao

Tuguegarao City (13 September) — Asia’s Grandmaster Eugene Torre together with 9th Grandmaster of the Philippines Jayson Gonzales recently visited this city to launch the First Open Chess Tournament to be held on October 9-10, 2010 at the Paseo Reale here.

Speaking with the members of the media here, GM Torre said that the tournament aims to promote chess and at the same time to help boost the tourism industry in the region.

Torre has expressed optimism that the tournament which is the biggest open tournament in the Philippines will be successful with the help of the different national government agencies such as the Department of Tourism (DOT), Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and others.

On October 9, 2010, 9:00-11:30 in the morning, GM Torre, GM Jayson Gonzales and IM Yves Ranola will sponsor a Chess Clinic for Kiddies and the Simultaneous Chess Exhibition from 1:00-5:00 in the afternoon.

Torre said that the tournament which has two categories, the Open Category and the Kiddies Category, will be played in nine (9) Rounds Swiss System with the rate of play of 25 minutes per player to finish the game.

The Open Category is open to all chess players, including the Grandmaster, International master, FIDE master, Woman master, Woman FIDE Master, National Master, Rated and Unrated while the Kidies Category is open to children who are 14 years old and below.
