Chess: Carlsen wins in London

Norway’s chess ace Magnus Carlsen won the London Chess Classic on Tuesday following a nail-biting finish against home favourite Nigel Short. The 19-year-old now tops the world ranking.
Carlsen will become the first teenaged chessplayer in history to occupy the first place in the official world rankings, which will be published on 1 January 2010.
At the gala prizegiving Tuesday evening, the trophy and winner’s cheque for 25,000 euros was presented to tournament winner Magnus Carlsen.
– This is an unbelievable acheivment by Magnus. A great day, says Secretary General of the Norwegian Chess Association, Dag Danielsen.
