Too good to be true? Breaking News White to move. Does White have a winning attack or is it just a fantasy? How should White proceed? Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Qh6 followed by Nh4 and white shud win !
1. Qh6 Qg8
2. Nh4
Dont know what cud be the response of black .. K cant go to last rank as Rh8 pins the Q.
White is down a knight and a pawn, but if nothing else can draw with 1. Rxg7 Kxg7 (else 2. Qh8++) 2. Qh6+ and perpetual check to follow.
Better, perhaps, is 1. Qh6 followed by 2. Nh4, 3. Qxg6+, and 4. Rxg7. I think Black’s best responses are as follows:
1. Qh6 Qf8
2. Nh4 Re8
3. Qxg6+ Ke7
4. Rxg7+ Kd8
after which White has regained the lost material but I suspect Black can still hold.
2. … Re8 wud be followed by Ng6 preventing the escape route for thew B king
Okay, so without 1…Qf8 and 2…Re8, Black must trade his queen for White’s rook. But:
1. Qh6 Qf8
2. Nh4 Re8
3. Nxg6 Qg8
4. Nxe5+ Kf8
5. Qf6+ Qf7
6. Qxf7++
So White does have a win.
I like 1.Rxg7+ Kxg7 2.Qh6+ Kf7 3.Qh7+ etc.
Black can never block a check and White can bring his knight into the action via h4 and g6.
Susan, this is another puzzle that just looks simple. Qh6 and then Nh4 and then the rest is trivial. So easy to find.
