In a repeat of the previous Grand Prix in Tbilisi, Baadur Jobava and Evgeny Tomashevsky were paired in the first round. Tomashevsky won again but only after turning the tables from a very grim position.

The local Grand Prix nominee, Dmitry Jakovenko, defeated Anish Giri in the longest game of the day. Right after the opening white won a pawn and then traded most of the pieces to convert the advantage in the Rook ending.
