Researches have shown that Chess and Music are the only two actitivities that connect the right and left brain. Some top level chess players are also musically talented. Below are some of the obvious names:
GM Vasily Smyslov – Baritone Singer
GM Lajos Portisch – Opera Singer
GM Mark Taimanov – Concert Pianist
(GM) Francois-Andre Danican Philidor – Opera Composer
GM Igor Ivanov – Pianist
GM Emil Sutovsky – Singing?
Can you add more names to this list?
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Susan,
wasn’t Lajos Portisch trained as an opera singer?
This isn’t one to add to the list, but Susan, did you ever hear Bobby Fischer sing? I read in the book “No Regrets” that he liked to sing rock songs.
Philidor

GM Emil Sutovsky.What a voice!
The composer Sergei Prokofiev was supposedly expert strength.
and of course Philidor was a notable composer as well.
Philidor – violinist
Didn’t Smyslov sing opera?
Albert Einstein – played violin and also the Ruy Lopez. Not titled but I think you’ll agree he’s in the same intelligence league as a GM easily.
Smyslov wasnt good enough to enter the Bolshoi Opereta or something to that effect. He however did record some songs as a soloist though. His songs can still be heard over Russian radio.
Ray Charles he was only about 1600 strength but that ain’t bad for a blind man.
GM Simon agdestein dancer? In a tv program of famous people doing thing they don’t know who to do.
Could you give us some more info on these researches, which show that Chess and Music are the only two actitivities that connect the right and left brain?
