More magical chess from Levon Aronian gave him a deserved lead at the SOCAR FIDE Candidates in London, as his third-round opponent Vasily Ivanchuk lost on time for the second successive game. Ivanchuk again played like a genius with just a few seconds left on his clock, but was physically unable to get to the time control at move 40.

V. Ivanchuk – L. Aronian

1.d4 Nf6 2.Bg5 e6 3.Nd2 c5 4.e3 b6 5.Ngf3 Bb7 6.c3 Be7 7.Bd3 0–0 8.Bxf6 Bxf6 9.h4 Nc6! 10.Ng5 (Aronian saw 10.Bxh7+ Kxh7 11.Ng5+ Kh6 wins) 10…g6 11.f4 Ne7! 12.Qg4 h5 13.Qh3 cxd4 14.exd4 b5 (If White cannot play g2-g4, his aggression has only weakened his position) 15.a3 (15.Bxb5 Rb8 16.Be2 Qc7 17.0–0 Nf5, but not 15…Qb6?! 16.Bd3 Qxb2 17.Rb1 Qxc3 18.Rxb7) 15…Qb6 16.Rg1?! (16.0–0 cutting losses was best) 16…Nd5 17.Nge4 Bg7 18.Qf3 (Ivanchuk only had about 10 minutes left here for 22 moves)

Position after 18.Qf3

18…b4 (Or 18…a5) 19.axb4 Nxb4 20.Nc4 Qb5 (20…Qc7!) 21.Ne5!! (Only move 21.cxb4 Qxb4+ 22.Ncd2 f5 wins) 21…Nxd3+ 22.Nxd3 Qf5 23.Ndc5 (23.Nd6 Bxf3 24.Nxf5 Be4 25.Nxg7 Bxd3 wins) 23…Bc6 24.b4 (Ivanchuk had to play the rest of his move nearly instantly and what moves they were) 24…Rfb8 25.Ra5! a6 26.Qe3 Qg4 27.g3 Rb5 28.Rxa6 Rxa6 29.Nxa6 e5!? (Playing for tricks as Ivanchuk had just seconds) 30.dxe5 Bxe4 31.c4!!

Position after 31.c4!!

(31.Qxe4 Rxe5! was the point. But there followed) 31…Rb6!! 32.Qxb6 Qf3 33.Qf2 Qa3 34.Nc5 0-1 34.Nc5 Qxb4+ 35.Kd1 Bf5 leaves White helpless against the coming Bf8.

Final position after 34.Nc5
