only black’s b5 pawn can move, so …
1. Kc5 b4
2. Kb7 b3
3. Kd8 b2
4. Kb7 mat
Kxb2
d4!
Yeeh
Seven.
White loses the knight vs. pawn race, so White has to give Black more moves.
1. d4 b4
2. Kd2 c1(any)
3. Nxc1 b3
4. Nd3 b2
5. Ne5 b1(N) (else, 6. Nf7#)
6. Kd3 (any)
7. Nf7#
1. d4 b4
2. Kd2 c1
3. Nxc1 b3
4. Nd3 b2
5. Ne5 b1
6. Nf7++
1.d4 b4
2.Kd2 c1=Q
3.Nxc1 b3
4.Nd3 b2
5.Ne5 b1=N+
6.Ke3
Good one! 🙂
1. d4! b4
2. Kd2! c1=Q+
3. Nxc1 b3
4. Nd3 b2
5. Ne5 b1=N+
6. Kc1 Nd2
7. Nf7#
The trick is to avoid ..b2+ and win a tempo with Nxc1.
Mate in four starting with Na5. Others will take much longer because of checks King has to capture on b2 and c1.
Mates in 6 or 7:
1. d4 b4, 2. Kd2 c1=Q, 3. Nc1 b3, 4. Nd3 b2, 5. Ne5 b1=Q, 6. Nf7#. However, if 5… b1=N then need an extra move to mate.
1. d4! b4 2.Kd2! c1Q+ 3.Nxc1 b3 4.Nd3 b2 5.Ne5 b1N+ 6.Kc1 and mate next move.
Mate in 7
1.d4 b4 2.Kd2! c1=Q+ 3.Nxc1 b3
4.Nd3 b2 5.Ne5 b1=N+ 6.Kd3 N any
7.Nf7++
1.d4 b4 2.Kd2 c1Q 3.Nc1 b3 4.Nd3 b2
5.Ne5 b1Q 6.Nf7 # mate
1.d4! b4
2.Kd2 c1=Q
3.Nxc1 b3
4.Nd3 b2
5.Ne5 b1=N+
6.Kd3 N~
7.Nf7#
Very nice!
Mate is 7 is the best I got.
1. d4 b4
2. Kd2 c1=Q+
3. Nxc1 b3
4. Nd3 b2
5. Ne5 b1=N+
6. Kc1 Nc3
7. Nf7#
Most black responses are forced.
Arun
fastest way to mate starts with
d4 …b4 Kd2 …c1=q+ Nxc1 …b3 Nd3 …b2 Ne5 …b1=N+ Kd3 and Nf7#
I think it is more complex than just trying to move the knight to f7, because it takes 4 moves to get there and in 3 moves the b pawn will get to b2 checking the white king and then what. Kxb2 and then c1=Q Kxc1 and stalemate.
I am still trying to figure out the solution

White mates in 7, starting with Jon’s move.
Poor Bishop, he didn’t play this time!
1.d4! B4 2.Kd2 !! c1/Q 3.Nxc1 B3 4. Nd3 B2 5. Ne5 b1/Q 6.Nf7 mate !
