Zambia’s Jonathan Thomas has won a gold medal at the just-ended South Africa Open Chess Championship in Cape Town.

Thomas, 12, finished third overall in the B-section of the championship held at Newlands Rugby Stadium conference centre and came first in the under-14 category.

Thomas missed a chance to go top of the group in round 10 when he was defeated by the B-section’s highest ranked player, Shaafee Begg of South Africa.

In the round 10 game, which Thomas lost, Begg, 14, eventually claimed the B-section title with a game to spare following his an assailable 10 points while the Zambian and four others remained on eight points apiece.
