Austrian composer Franz Schubert dies from typhus aged 31. In addition to his 600 works, his genius for the lyrical is evident in his eight surviving symphonies, especially the Unfinished.

Jose Raul Capablanca, one of the greatest chess players of all time and a major influence on the modern game, is born.

1917
Birth of Indian politician and stateswoman Indira Gandhi (1917-84). She followed her father Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, into politics and became prime minister from 1966-75 and again from 1980 – 84, when she was assassinated.

Soviet Red Army troops begin a massive counter-offensive against the Germans at Stalingrad.

1946
The first UNESCO conference opens in Paris at which the organisation attains full status as an agency.

1958
Signing of the first trade agreement between Viet Nam and the Kingdom of Cambodia.

1969
The US Apollo 12 lunar module lands on the moon, carrying astronauts Charles Conrad and Alan Bean.
