A few months ago, Arianne Caoili made worldwide headline news right after the Turin Olympiad by being in the middle of a clash between GM Gormally and GM Aronian. Now, she once again made headlines news when Stars judge Todd McKenney branded her a fake.
Is the media being unfair to her?
Or do you think she got what she deserved?
What is your take?
Chess siren won’t move

PROVOCATIVE prancer Arianne Caoili denies claims she lied about her dance past.
“I don’t feel guilty and I’ve done nothing wrong,” chess champion Caoili, 19, said.
Caoili said her triumph as a Dancing with the Stars finalist was ruined by accusations she is a trained dancer.
Stars judge Todd McKenney does not believe Caoili’s amateur status and branded her a fake.
Caoili’s mother, Annette, told a Brisbane newspaper her daughter excelled in classical ballet at the Academy of London.
Yesterday, Arianne Caoili denied all charges.
“I am not responsible for what my mother says. I am only responsible for what I say,” Caoili declared.
The full story can be read here.
She deserves what she got. She lied and got caught. Simple as that.
who cares
That said, I’m pretty sure she is good publicity for Salsa. I am a Salsero – as Savielly Tartakower once said “All chessplayers should have a hobby.”
If she can find time to be a professional chess player, a professional dancer, and still get guys fighting over her, then damn good luck to her.

Who?
“I say Australia has a lack of strong women chess players and we need her …”
Hear, hear. Or is it “here, here”?
I couldn’t agree more. Aoili is the pride of AUS. And her mother is a very nice person. You get that feeling after talking an hour with her.
an accusation is not a conviction – however, some discussions here around (e.g. about toilets…) have clearly proven, that there are a lot of people who make no differences… (as a matter of course, most of these wannabe judges refer to their own freedom of expression…)

Vesma B:
I think you misunderstood my meaning when you quoted me on what sort of publicity Arianne is bringing to chess.
What I intended to convey was that Arianne may seem ‘dubious’ but it is difficult to find a ‘clear refutation’.
What I do find disappointing is that she does not make more of an effort to promote chess. Celebrities do have a huge influence on what is cool and chess in Australia (and the U.S. as well) could do with an image boost.
I say we let the FIDE appeals committee investigate this!
Bob Hu: Thank you for clarifying your position (i.e., “What I intended to convey was that Arianne may seem ‘dubious’ but it is difficult to find a ‘clear refutation'”).
I think it unfortunate that the London Academy, which could provide a “‘clear refutation’,” wasn’t approached BEFORE the accusation was leveled by the judge and reported in the media, since I find the accusation itself ‘bad’ publicity.
While I myself hope she’s acquitted of the charge (good for her and the game, which again will receive mention, but in a better light), I still think her denegration of Kournikova’s achievements unjust and, in fact, a tad tawdry.
What are u all talking about ? who is she lol, ok i will google.

It’s all about Australian RACISM.
They are old white racists and bully amd exclude all the Asian faces from what is called the mainstream Australian way of life, which Howard proposes.
This little incident can be interpreted as yet another case of a racial scapegoat in a country
, where things seem to change slowlier than rotten water.
(By the way I am not Australian myself. But look at how many
Australian convict bumpkins want some publicity here themselves. It’s all the outback thing, mate LMAO.

Dancing with the stars started 10 weeks ago with 10 contestants..
Arianne Caoili has made the final and the public vote each week who they want to kick out and who stays..
Arianne making the final shows how she is loved .
..
your racial comments here are a bit like your brain stuffed..most likely your a racial dick and just airing you own thoughts..dickhead
Arianne may even win the final next week that would really make us aussies very racial.Don’t use the word “Mate” if you don’t know it’s meaning
I’m a Chinese Australian and I can say that Australia really IS a multicultural country and a wonderful place to live. As far as my experiences go schoolchildren may make racist remarks against asians but that’s about it – adults are more sensible. It does not seem right for someone who does not live in Australia to pass judgement on our country as a racist one.
Vesma B:
I feel you misunderstand what I am saying, please read my comments in full, my comment was about what kind of publicity she is giving for chess.
I think you have your picture backwards:
If Arianne is a professional dancer and claims she is an amateur, then it is akin to Susan playing chess competitively in a novice chess league with no rating beforehand, akin to Michael Jordon playing amateur basketball, Carlos Santana or Luciano Pavarotti entering novice musical talent contests.
Thus, they would all be akin to the full grown lion pretending to be a kitten.
this all kinda smacks like anna kournikova, where its more style than substance, kinda sad that a female chess player gets more press for looks than play, but such is life and culture..
I really don’t care whether she lied to get into some stupid TV show. What is bothering me is that mainstream media keeps calling her things like “grandmaster” “former chess champion” or “chess queen”. She once was a promising 14-year-old, then quit and never regained her old strength…

Here is a poem for you by a Chinese-Australian, have a good read as well as some flashbacks from old days, “mate” (and I know what it means. An abbreviation of “Checkmate”, right? They say that when they happen to mate a king down there.) I am sure Australia is now a racism-free multicultural country with no more official racist policy stipulated in their constitutiuon LOL.Oh poor Arianne. She should migrate to America or France with much more freedom and common sense to be treated more fairly and humanely!
A Racist Chinese Father (published in 1995 by a Chinese-Australian author! Yeah, I found this, albeit with some facility!)
the other day my son came back from school asking me what does it mean “you fing indian.” I told him in chinese what it meant or could mean and asked why. he told me someone in his class said that to him. i dont’t remember if I told him to talk to his teacher about it or to answer back, but later on it turned out that he’d mispronounced it; the correct form should be “you fing idiot”.
again the other day he came back with the story that someone at school pushed him hard from behind so he fell to the ground and hurt himself badly. i spent half the night teaching him kongfu, how to defend himself and if necessary how to hit back. HIT HARD ON THE NOSE OR THE MOUTH! my blood was running wild and fast while i was shouting this but his mother became fearful, real fearful, saying stop such nonesense! if your son really hurt others he’d be, and you’d be punished. but was he punished he who hurt my son so badly? i yelled.
story after story came back each day ever since from my son:that this boyt pinched him hard on the ear, and the girl pulled down his pants for him, and this big fellow came directly to him and slapped across his face, so much so that it soundd all like fiction, that my wife began blaming him for all the trouble he’d caused saying why they all hit you? hurt you? call your names? there must have been something wrong with you, with your behaviour, with your identity, with your alien self and i could only mutter to myself and to him, you bastard, useless bastrad. Why didn’t you answer back? why didn’t you hit back? why didn’t you eye an eye, tooth a tooth? Why didn’t you KILL? stop such nonsense,my wife was screaming, screeching. I was afraid, terribly afraid, my son was crying softly that they were too big for him, like hairy apes.
people told me that i could go report to his teacher, that such things were common enough in australia, and for children even teachers believe that it’s part of growing up in a society.
but i was so angry with my boy who never seemed to take it to heart like me. he’d come back and tell me, dad the big brother next door was very nice to me that day for he patted me on the shoulder and said we are friends. by the way the big brother next door was the bloke who once burnt my son’s chest with a burning cigarette butt and stuck a chewed gum between his shirt and naked back, but my boy would go on saying nice things about these PEOPLE
I know, I would never do that being older and more chinese. if someone suddenly stopped greeting me i’d do the same to him, if someone called me names i’d call him names, hit me i’d hit him, kill me i’d kill him. if they wouldn’t telephone me I wouldn’t telephone them, if they wouldn’t speak to me i wouldn’t speak to them. if they didn’t come to me, I wouldn’t go to them, if they wrote to spite me I would write to spite them, if possible in chinese you know not many of them kow how to speak chinese although they pretend they are china experts. they are so stupid you know drinking so much that they produce a lot of idiots although they like calling others bloody idiots because they are ashamed of their own. oh come on boy, you don’t understand this, you are such a kid.

Yep,
Australia has refused refugees on Tampa back in 2002, abolished the
autonomous Aboriginal political body and replaced it with a “mainstream” 50s style Aboriginal ministry, then the racial riots by Lebanese Ausstralians , who were provoked by white racist on the Sydney beach and oh dont forget lovely Pauline Hanson either, who proposed all migration to Australia to be ended and even now hoisted as a national hero on mainstream Australian TV. Past record? It shows White Australian Policy, mean dictation test and relectant and indifferent attitude to multiculturalism. Australia as one? That’s laughable. Australia is definetely divided along the racial line unlike America or France. Now shut up and accept that Australia is a disgrace in the world.
This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.
Hoddy , are you one of those Howard supporters who really believe his Australia as a “race-free” country?
Howard wouond back the Australian race mentality by about 50 years!
He decided innocent refugees on Tampa to be a national threat and even made up a story of them throiwng their babies overboard to convince the public that they were cold-blooded savages. As it turned out, it was Howard’s embarassing lie, but even the big-time gaff did not turn him into an unpopular PM, but one of the most popular ones. Then the DIMIA minister, Phillip Ruddock, who to the eyes of an outsider comes across as one of those evil figures from “Star Wars” is now an Attorney Gerneral as his cruel racist policy was praised well by the neo-conservative PM. The Au government reminds me of a bit of Mazis during WW2 in that they propagandalise race-free nation to the world and in reality kill lock up refugees in remote desert detention centers for years (without giving children a proper access to educatio) and “killing” Aboriginal inmates in their prison cells by forcing them into a state of deep, suicidal depression.
If you have lived with Aborigines, you know what a racist country Australia is. If you deny itg, yoyu are a NAZI sympathiser or a plain hypocrite. Don’t dare to say it’s a legacy of “European” violence. It is “Australian” racism and cruelty that seems to contribute a lot to the miserable status quo of the contemporary Aboriginal people. The Australian government officially “stole” or kidnapped Aboriginal babies from their communities (on account that some “white” blood in the babies made them somewhat more receptive to their “European” education (gross, they were not even European, but some parochial-minded Australians!). And even to this date, the government makes no acknowldgement of the so-called stolen generation. How racist and cruel would that get? Even more cruel is the public acquienscence or some twist or white-washing of Australia’s appaling racist records just as Hoddy does above.
Australians are indeed racists and whenever they are brought to admitting the most basic fact of their life (I would say racism is arguably the formost national identity of Australians both historically and contemporarily.),
they make benign excuses and do their best to hide the truth like the way the halacaust deniers make inconsistent, blind-folded logic about the fact of 6 million Jewish people gased in chambers. (Mind you, Australians are believed to have excersised genocide against the Aborigines and the government never even acknowledges what Australians crually did in the past.)
And Pauline Hanson. Nah, she is still highly popular with the Autsralian public as she has been dancing with Blue Heeler’s John Woods on “Dancing with the Celebrity”. I cannot believe the super extreme psychoptic racsit mania could make a tortally iapropriate and insensitive come-back like that to any public life and it is just a testament that how racists and “abnormal” Australians are.
Basically Australians, I believe, will always keep denying their cruel racism with some suspicious facts and statistics (such as Australia is the 5 th best place in the world to live in etc. Which source? What year? Where is it?) and continue their quontidian hypocrisity when the rest of the world can no longer care to examine the reality of.
They are a clever criminal squand and definetely one of the outdatd racist kind, who gets away with lots of things with lack of information and interest in them in the wider world.
And the Lebanese race riot (and there was an Aboriginal riot before that too) is just like any
other clash between two football hooligans?
Hoddy, you are such a racist to swap grave social matters around with some irrelevant non-analogy to turn attention from the hedious, ungainly.
Admit that you are a racist like most of Australians and you just have to deny that because the Australian racism as an undeniable historical and contemporary social fact would only keep you as a world’s embarassing laughing stock.
I tell you the tip, Hoddy. Just admit everything and start over.
That’s far better than keep denying and go on like a smmoth-mouthed swindler with some criminal records.

Well wars are much better than
Australian hypocrisity. Unfortunately, Australia is such a small kangaroo country and even no terrorist cares about taking the convicts seriously.
Australians the real cynics to talk about wars without knowinbg what they really mean.
Hello.
As an Australian who is not a racist I am offended at that person who said that ALL Australians are racists.
By world stndards Australia is a tolerant country. For goodness sake, we allow Sheik Mulally to come here and say that WOMEN ARE TO BE BLAMES FOR RAPE BECUASE OF THE WAY THEY DRESS : a view that is clearly disgusting to most Australians. Yet have we stoned him? No. Have we chucked him out of the country ? No. Will we allow him to exercise his right to free speech? Yes!
And acn we cut the puerile diatribe about convicts? Australia is a com-plex society that is no more made of convicts than England is of Romans or Russia of Cosacks.

Just had a talk to Hoddy on the phone he told me that he deleted his posting to defuse this situation.
He said this has nothing to do with chess and he is not posting anymore in the future. The mud slinging is a bid disturbing and put his efforts to teaching kids chess. he added that he can’t help but respond when it comes to bad bias comments and is upsetting some posters and that is not what Susans great chess blog is about
This Vohaul and partner are of Nazi type we old never forget. Otto
I am not Vohaul or the other guy who posted the agreeing comment.
But one as an international student from an Asian country, I have to say that there is an element of truth in that Australia is a racist country. (And I completely disagree with the person’s tone of voice calling Australians modern-day convicts etc, which is just absurd.)
I had also studied in America before and I could clearly tell they way I was looked at and treated by Australians (or Melbournians) were those I had experienced in the New England area of America.
I certainly agree that all Australians are racists aand closed-minded. But my personal experiences combined with tons of others of my friends confirm that Australia can be extra harsh on colored people when it comes to race relations.
Mike Chong
Sorry ,
I mean that th way I was looked at by Australians were quite different from that I had experienced in America.
By this I mean that Americans treated me quite fairly regardless of my color, Asian nationality etc, whereas Australians came across as cold and blunt while making strange faces each time they had to deal with me.
There are tons of first-hand accounts like this I heard from my Asian friends who studied in Autsralia.
One was invited to a barbecure party and there he was told by one drunk white Australian that they wanted to chop him up and save his meat for the next “barbie” by freezing him in the icebox etc.
It might have been just one exceptional drunk Australian who said that. But Australians also may have to realise that if they dont stop these racist behaviors on the spot, they are also subject to some biased judgement by the poor racist victims who have taken the matter to heart.
