Youth and Sports Minister Azad Rahimov in his speech to journalists at a farewell ceremony for Vugar Gashimov talked about how great this loss is for Azerbaijani sport.

“Vugar Gashimov was a very talented chess player, one of the best in the world. His untimely death is a heavy loss for the Azerbaijani people and the Azerbaijani sport,” the minister said, 1news.az reports.

He had long struggled with a heavy illness, but we lost our great athlete, despite the fact that under a special order of the President, the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan and the Ministry of Youth and Sport created all the conditions for the proper treatment of Vugar in a special clinic in Germany. However, we all know how hard it is to emerge victorious from such unequal duel with a severe illness. Vugar is gone. But I think he’s still with us, and our athletes will always remember about him.

With regard to the perpetuation of the name of Vugar Gashimov, such decisions are made by the state as a whole, and not the minister. Therefore, any proposals should primarily be addressed to the president of the country. His opinions and views are paramount. In the last couple of days we received offers to perpetuate the name of Vugar Gashimov in the name of a street, a centre or a complex, but so far I cannot say whether any official decision on the matter will be taken.”
