Mystery Remains
05/26/2010 Bend

The mystery remains into who the man calling himself Jason Evers really is. He’s been described as a talented chess player and a member of the Central Oregon Chess Club – meaning he has a specialized level of intelligence. It has left the U.S. State Attorney wondering what his next move may be.

In his chess game, Jason likes to play the King’s Gambit as white, it’s a risky play that opens up the King and sacrifices a pawn to gain advantage.

“Jason Evers,” the former Oregon Liquor Control Commission Regional Manager in Bend, is known on federal court documents as John Doe. He submitted his resignation on last Thursday.

While in Bend, he was the number two chess player in the Central Oregon Chess Club. Not quite expert or master, but “Class A,” meaning better than 80 to 90 percent of tournament players. Now, sitting in federal prison, he’s accused of stealing the identity of a murdered three-year old boy from Ohio. “Jason was well respected within the club and we’re hopeful that the reason for assuming a false identity was fairly innocuous,” said Eric Holcomb, the Club Director.
