Who cares.
Kasparov nailed it in his interview: why does the public care about this match between two old guys than games between the top players? Something is wrong.
One of the things must turn off amateurs is ratings inflations and too many GM titles.
To think that Ben Finegold and Vishy Anand share the same title —it’s ridiculous!
Chess at the top levels looks great, but below that?
Ugh.
Many of the games by supposed IMs at the SPICE tournament were just awful.
And the bad sportsmanship of playing dead lost positions for many moves—which I saw in more than one game—turns off this spectator too.
IMO, the bottom line is that everyone knows intellectually that chess is a dead game, just as checkers was dead 20 years ago.
Why watch humans play when they are inferior to cheap commercial programs?
It’s a bit like watching drunk people play tic tac toe: sure, someone might lose, but where’s the thrill?
Chess players need a new game.
I suggest playing checkers on a larger board. Checkers is a fantastic game, and the flexibility of being able to enlarge the board should keep it ahead of computers for quite a while.
Also, checkers can be played on alternate surfaces—toruses, spheres, etc.
Go is my favorite game, but I think its too hard for amateurs to appreciate professional games. Checkers is much more exciting.
I don’t know about 2800 but I believe he will certainly be World Champion someday.

You can beleive as much as you want and pray, too, it wont help. Magnus will always be top 10 and nothing more. It’s not in his nature to be world champion.

You don’t know my chess rating, or my go rating which was AGA 6 dan when i played tournaments.
In the last 5 years I’ve been in the top 30 in at the 5r category on ICC, which is not bad at all

You probably never even played checkers with a good player. Why put it down? The only reason I’m putting down chess is that it is dead, just like checkers is dead.
Why are people still staring at the corpse?
I learned to play when the game still had mystery. Today? Blah..

Now can somebody get us back on the *original* post topic? Please? Alright then, I’ll do it. I voted that Magnus would break 2800 by the end of 2009. His talent is like an earth force: It just doesn’t stop. I think this “Kasparov as coach” thing is looking pretty good, no? As for it not being in his nature to be WC, baloney. What the heck is that supposed to mean anyway? That he’s not a jerk like Topalov? Gee then, I guess it’s a complete accident that Vishy won the title — nice guys finish last, y’know.
This computer argument and “dead game” thing is hogwash. What if you let a golf swing and a putting machine compete in the US Open? Of course, the machine would win every hole.
This is about humans playing and competing against each other. The machines and computers will always be better than us. Even a well programmed robot can beat Bolt on the 100 m dash. Does that mean that Bolt should call it quits,too?
