Filipino grandmasters lead teams to ‘Final Four’ of American college chess

January 6, 2013 9:37pm

Filipino chess grandmasters Wesley So and Julio Catalino Sadorra helped their respective universities reach the President’s Cup, an event that is considered the ‘Final Four’ of collegiate chess, after four different universities forged a five-way tie at the Pan-American Intercollegiate Team Chess Championship, held from December 27 to 30 at Princeton University.

Out of 44 teams that entered, five emerged triumphant, tied for first place: the University of Texas at Dallas, the University of Maryland in Baltimore County, the University of Illinois, and both squads fielded by Webster University.

Two of those five squads featured a Filipino grandmaster. Julio Catalino Sadorra, a senior, bannered the University of the Texas at Dallas team, while freshman Wesley So was an integral part of Webster University’s Team A.

The 44-university field was the largest the competition has drawn since the 1986 affair, which saw 53 teams slug it out.

The squads now advance to the College Chess Final Four, to be held in Herndon, Virginia, on April 6 and 7. – AMD, GMA News
