BBC News just has just reported tonight that the Indian Giant Tata Steel will make an offer to buy out Corus Steel within the next week or so. If the deal goes through, what will happen to the annual Corus event?
As reported in the BBC website on October 30th, (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6100134.stm) The bid has been approved by the Corus’ board and was only awaiting the approval of the shareholders for completion. Hopefully this won’t mean the end of the fantastic Corus tournament (I believe that they signed a contract to form part of the Chess Grand Slam, http://www.chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=3335) as I understand chess is becoming increasingly popular in India and they have also and increasing number of young elite players so maybe we will see more players from that country playing in The Netherlands.
I thought last year when i was participating the tournament, there has been told by the organisation the tournament is guaranteed until 2009, but i am not sure! greetings, Mart

Tata Steel is known to have sponsored chess players, e.g. GM Dibyendu Braua. I should know; my father worked there for 30+ years.

“STEEL CORUS” will be probably the name of the tour, standing for “STILL CORUS”.
Polin.
I hope there should not be end of corus chess.
