Carlsen’s Father: I don’t Want Carlsen to Win the World Championship but Want Him to Enjoy His Romance

The first five games of the “Kanion Cup” Nanjing Pearl Spring Chess Tournament have ended and Carlsen ranks the first with two win games and three draws. Carlsen’s father—Henrik Magnus said that Carlsen has done a good job until now and he hasn’t required him to win the world championship. He only wants his son to live a happy life and enjoy his romance in the future time.

When Carlsen was five years old, his father tried to teach him to play chess. However, Carlsen didn’t show great interest in it, as a result, his father thought he had no gift for playing chess. Until one time when Carlsen was eight years old, his winning against his elder sister made him become quite interested in chess. Carlsen’s father smiled and said that parents must be very patient with their children according to this. Carlsen is also very interested in geography, history, news and political issues. He likes to read books regarding American’s presidents particularly. However, he spends much more time in playing chess and as a result; he can’t keep the balance between his study and chess-playing. Carlsen’s father will show respect to his son’s choice if Carlsen decides not to play chess any more. And his father said, “It is his own life and he has the right to determine his own fate.”

When asked the question whether it will affect Carlsen’s romance with girls since he keeps a firm accompany with Carlsen, he claimed, “As a father, I am always looking forward to his happy life and wants him to fall in love with girl who he really likes as other common youngsters. After all, it is one of the important parts in his life.” Carlsen’s father also expressed that he would not always accompany with Carlsen to participate in different games in the future and he said that Carlsen should learn to be independent.

Besides, Carlsen’s father showed that his son has also taught him many things. Carlsen will practice playing chess through a computer and at the same time, he will watch games in different tournaments on the internet. “Practicing online will be a future direction of chess development and I have learnt a lot from the children on the internet.” Carlsen’s father said.
