What are some of the biggest chess news globally in 2007?
– Anand winning the World Championship in Mexico City
– Kamsky winning the World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk
– Kramnik winning Tal Memorial by big margin
– Ivanchuk winning the World Blitz
– Kramnik then Anand becoming the new #1 player in the world
– Carlsen breaking 2700
Can you name some more?
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
Anand is the biggest story of 2007.
I think Karjakin also broke 2700.
I agree, it must be Anand.
Chess engines getting to the 3000 ELO level! I think that’s the biggest news.
Topalov winning the champions league tournament
Yes, Karjakin broke 2700. So did Cheparinov. But they will not have an official 2700+ rating before January 2008.
Since the question says- GLOBALLY- it has to be Anand winning Mexico.
I think its Anand, who made history by becoming truly undisputed world champion.
If i am not a Russian, i would say Anand made history by becoming a true world champion, brings glory to Chess in 2007
Other major news of 2007, Susan Polgar was elected to the USCF board, promising to clean things up and create a new tone.
Which seems to have failed. What really disappoints me the most is that you didn’t/don’t have the courage and integrity to take on the fight and try to win it. You went in to do this thing, they’re stonewalling you, you’re not making noise, not rallying the membership to your cause, not publicising what is going on, not doing anything visible at all for the USCF. Don’t get our hopes up and then leave us out in the cold, fight and win! You have the grass-roots support to win the fight, but not if you run and hide from it.
I don’t think that Markus 2700 oints is a news so what about Kajakin, Cheparinov etc.????
Anand, without question.
Well, you forgot Kramnik regaining the #1 spot in the rating list after how many years?
About Anand being the undisputed champion: He won a tournament out of many. Just because that tournament was called World Championship it was still just one of many tournaments. The match with Kramnik will show who the real champion is.
Still it was a great achievement by Anand and a highlight in 2007.
Of course the continuing rise of Magnus Carlsen, especially after his bad Corus results was a highlight, being the only one ever to break the 2700 at age 16.
So for me, Anand, Kramnik and Carlsen are the highlights 2007.
Konero Humpy breaking 2600
how about two u18 reaching to the semifinal of a WORLD CUP!!!
and me winning a game to a guy over 2000!!!
jb.
without any doubt it’s the
RETURN
of GM Gata “the blind bind” Kamsky to the top level of chess!
GREAT!
It’s good to be King. Hands down on Anand becoming world champ.
Kramnik return to #1 rating position on the 1st of January
and Kamsky return to the top.
Concerning Anand – there are so many disputs, so he is not an undisputed champion :-))
next year will erase the Mexico tournament anyway, if Anand would beat Kramnik, Anand byself will count this like his the main life achiviement; if Kramnik would beat Anand, Anand Mexico win will just equal Topalov 2005 San Luis win.
And for kids – Carlsen and Karjakin – lets reserve some other year
