Queen to the corner, queen to the corner!
1. Rxg7+ Kxg7
2. Bxh6+ Kxh6
3. Qxf6+ Bg6
4. g4 Qa5
5. h4 Qa1+
6. Kf2
1.Rg7+ Kxg7 (Kf8,h8 2.Qxf6+-)
2.Bh6+ Kxh6 (only move)
3.Qxf6+ Bg6 (only move)
4.g4 Qa5 (only move to prevent mate on g5)
5.h4 Qa1+
6.Kf2 and only a queen sac prolongates the fight unnecessary.
rg7
bh6
qf6#
Since 1 Qxf6 Qxg3 looks like a bad idea, maybe instead:
1 Rxg7+ Kxg7 (1 .. Kf8 2 Qxf6)
2 Bh6+ Kxh6 (2 .. Kg8 3 Qxf6 and 4 Qg7#)
3 Qxf6+ Bg6
4 g4 Qa5 (the threat was g5#)
5 h4
followed by g5+ and hxg5#
1.Rxg7+ Kxg7 2.Bh6+ looks pretty final…
Hi Szuszu 😉
1.Rxg7+ Kxg7 2.Bh6+! Seems to work. If the king takes on h6 then, 3.Qxf6+ Bg6 4.g4 Qa5 5.h4 Qa1+ 6.Kf2 and black can’t stop mate on g5. (Not taking is worse with a quick mate on g7 I think)
It’s 9am and I have been up all night so cannot guarantee I didn’t miss anything lol

1.Resigns.
Wonderful!! solved it! Thank you very much, Susan Polgar!!!
Best wishes
A. Weiler
RXg7! Kxg7
BH6 KxH6
Qxf6 BG6
b4 Qa5
a4 Rc5
No computer, no chessboard.
1. Rxg7+ Kxg7
2. Bh6+ Kxh6
3. Qxf6+ Bg6
4. g4 Qa5
5. h4
I C R#g7 K#g7 followed by Bh6# as pretty convincing.
MM
1. Q:f6 Bg6
2. Qe5 looks like more than sufficient to win. Because Susan has posted this, I’m sure there is much more to be found.
How about
1.Rg7+…Kg7
2.Bh6+…Kh6
3.Qf6+…Bg6
4.g4…Qa5
5.h4 wins
1.Rg7!. If 1…Kxg7 then 2.Bh6!
1)R*g7 k*g7
2)Bh6 k*h6
3)Q*f6 bg6
4)g4 qa5
5)h4
So far, no one has given the full correct solution.
Best wishes,
Susan Polgar
Qxf6 and the queen can’t be captured because of the pin by the rook. Next we have g6 followed by Bh6 and mate will soon follow.
Before reading the posts I was going with Rainer’s solution…
If this is not fully correct I must rethink.
1. Rxg7, Kxg7 2. Bh6+!, Kxh6 (else Qxf6 with mate to follow) 3. Qxf6+, Bg6 looks very strong.
4. g4, Qa5 5. h4 (I still agree on that and thought 1:0 here)
5. -, Rc5!? This is the only move I see.
6. dxc5, Qxc5+
Now I have to take out a chess board to see if black gets out of the mess.
I wouldn’t like to be forced to calculate this line over the board in a real game. 🙂
So far…
Jochen
Les Szoldos,
I. Qxf6 Qxg3
2. hxg3 gxf6
and White has lost the exchange
Mark
Rainer looks like g4 qa5 h4 rc5!and if dc5 qc5+ and there are queen sacs hoping for stalemate.. I’m not sure how should white prceed, I’m to lazy to calculate now..
Okay, after 5. -, Rc5! 6. dxc5?, Qxc5+ black’s stalemate position (I did not see this without board!) seems to give him a simple draw. 7. Kh2, Qg1+! (=).
So there needs to be a better move. I really like 6. Qh8!? with the mating threat 7. Qf8#
Almost any bishop move (is there any other defense?) seems to give white big advantage after 7. Qf8+, Kg6 8. Qxc5 but 6. -, Bd3! seems to be a really strong move.
If white plays 6. Qd6 instead of 6. Qh8 to keep the bishop pinned black has 6. -, Rc8 with repetition (7. Qf6, Rc5 and so on).
Interesting position.
ok rxg7 K takes g7 pretty much forced bh6 chook kxh6 qxf6 chook bg6 g4 qa5 onnly move h4 rc5!! pxc5 qxc5+ and the queen gives it self up for stale mate!! i got it
1. Rxg7+ Kxg7
2. Bh6+ Kxh6
3. g4 Qa5
4. h4 Rc5
5. Qh8 (threat Qf8) 1-0
After
1.Rg7 Kg7 2.Bh6 Kh6 3.Qf6 Bg6
4.g4 Qa5 5.h4
black has
5. – Rc5!
and then
6.dc5 Qc5 7.Kg2 Qg1 8.Kg1
is a stalemate.
My idea
5.d5
to bring the rook behind the queen does not work.
5. – Qd5 6.h4 Rc5 7.g5 Qg5 8.hg5 Rg5 9.Kh2 Rg2
ist a draw, too.
Sorry, better is:
1. Rxg7+ Kxg7
2. Bh6+ Kxh6
3. g4 Qa5
4. h4 Rc5
5. Qd6! (threat Qf8) 1-0
I see another cute line but it also does not work.
…
4. g4, Qa5 5. d5!?
If Qxd5?? 6. h4! and now Rc5 does not help as black needs to sacrifice the queen but the rook.
But there is this intermediate check 5. -, Qc5+! 6. Kf1 (where else?), Qxd5 7. h4, Qh1+ 8. Kf2, Qh2+
Curiosly it still seems to be drawn but can white get anything else from this position?
As it is a real game it does not need to have a “solution”. So far there are several cute draw lines. 🙂
I have to stop playing chess and go and do the last shopping before christmas.
I am curious to later read more posts.
Jochen
PS: Does 5. h4, Rc5 6. dxc5, Qxc5+ 7. Qf2 give white slight advantage? 🙂
rubbish Qd6, Kg7. sorry 🙂
Must return to Qh8 line…
eg. 5.. Qa1+
6. Kh2 Be4
7. Qf6+ and mate in two by g5
but,
5.. Be4
6. dxc5!? Qxc5+
7. Kf1
might be worth looking for. Looks like 1-0 …
Well, at least this line looks winning:
1. Rxg7+ Kxg7
2. Bh6+ Kxh6
3. Qxf6+ Bg6
4. g4 Qa5
5. h4 Rc5
6. Qh8 Be4
7. Qf8+ Kg6
8. dxc5 1-0
but there might be other lines.

The solution I was going to post has already been provided by Rainer and Jean-Claude Schmidig.
Don’t see too many choices for Black in that line… it looks like a forced win, no?
Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays everyone.
A slightly different tack. I quite like white’s attack, and think it a forced win, after:
Rxg7+ kxg7
Qg5+ Kf8 forced
Qxf6
There are a number of variations that I haven’t analyzed exhaustively.
Now Qe7 would be mated by Qh8+
If Ke8 Bg4 looks strong
If instead Qc6
Qh8+ Ke7
Bg5+
I won’t transcribe all the variations I’ve examinedbut it seems the black king generally gets mated on d7 or d5. The pursuit by queen and bishops seems effective.
If Ra8 instead of Ke8 or Qc6 then Bf4 looks good
The black move Rc5 flummoxes the optimistic line ending with White’s g4, h4, h5. If black tries to sack his queen, he gets either a stalemate or what looks like a very even game. The solution hasn’t yet been suggested, I would say.
1. Rxg7+ Kxg7
2. Bxh6+ Kxh6
3. Qxf6+ Bg6
4. g4 Qa5
5. h4 Rc5
6. Qh8 Be4
7. Qf8+ Kg6
8. dxc5 1 – 0
Oh! Ok, a fuller account :-))
1. Rxg7+ Kxg7
2. Bxh6+ Kxh6
3. Qxf6+ Bg6
4. g4 Qa5
5. h4 Rc5! (only delays, but worth a try)
6. dxc5 Qxc5+
7. Kg2 Qd5+
8. Kh2 ……..and only a Q sac will delay the inevitable
eg 8……Qe5+
9. Qxe5 f5 (or Bh5 10. Qg5 mate)
10. g5 mate
There are other trivial Queen moves like 7…Qd2 or Qh5 trying to confuse things 🙂
So black sees all this and decides he can’t take,so..
1. Rxg7 Kf8 (Kh8 2. Qxf6 is over very quickly)
2. Rxf7! Qxf7
3. Qxc8+ Kg7 (or Ne8 4. Bh6+ Kg8 5. Bxc4)
4. Bxc4 Qe7
5. Qh3 Bg6 (Considered just 5. Bg5 but after Bf5 6. Bxf6+ Kxf6 7. Qa6+ Kg7 8. Be2 Qe3+ 9. Kf1 Qc1+ 10.Kf2 Qf4+ 11. Bf3 Qd2+ 12. Qe2 Qxc3 it starts to look unclear – perhaps just 5.Qe6 straight away? If Qd8 6.Qf7+ Kh8 7. Bg5 wins.)
6. Bh6+ Kg8
7. Qc8+ Ne8
8. Be6!? Qa3?!
9. h3 Qa1+
10.Kh2 and black is almost in zugzwang
Again done after an all-nighter, but hopefully closer this time. I’m only doing it coz last nights new one looks impossible lol. White looks completely lost at first glance, I will sleep first b4 tackling that one 😉
Oh I missed the stalemate too after 6. dxc5 Qxc5+ 7.Kh2 Qg1+ 8. Kh3 Qh2+ :*(
Dagnabbit! Will I never solve this problem lol, it looked so easy too :-))
Ok. so back to stalemate problem. After 1. g4 Qa5 how about just 2.Kg2? If Qd5+ 3. Bf3 Qb5 4. h4 (4….Qb2+ 5. Kh3) Now neither Rc5 or Qd7 work.
Or 2….Rc5 anyway 3. dxc5 Qxc5 but now there is no check to save black!?
Please tell me I finally done it, I think I will go nuts if it’s still wrong ;-))
1.Rxg7 Kxg7
2.Bh6+
is the start we are looking for ,isn’t it Susan?
But after that we have a forced exchange of heavy pieces (except bishops) after which white stays 2 pawns up.2 pawns up endgame usually means win,as this really is in this case. But not always. To post a 15-mover to demonstrate to the root that this is won endgame for white with 2 pawns up would be a nonsense.BTW,very difficult endgame.I am a FIDE master and took me quite a while to ensure myself that it is a technically won endgame. There’s no quick mate,no heavy material gain.Just position with 2 pawns up,that should be carefuly played to the end. What game this was?
regards
I would appreciate someone posting the game this is taken from. Regards to all.
