Texas Tech Knight Raiders qualify for College Chess Final Four

The Texas Tech Knight Raiders have qualified for the College Chess Final Four after their strong performance at the 2011 PanAm Intercollegiate Championship, which concluded Friday in Fort Worth.
The Knight Raiders, who won the College Chess Final Four last year, will now defend their national championship at this year’s event, which takes place in April 2012 in Washington, D.C. Texas Tech will enter the Final Four event ranked No. 1 in the nation.
Texas Tech earned its spot in the College Chess Final Four by defeating Princeton University (4-0), University of Toronto (3-1), Washington University (4-0) and Columbia University (3.5-0.5) at the PanAm Intercollegiate Championship. Texas Tech also tied 2-2 against New York University.
Texas Tech became the first school in the history of college chess to qualify for the College Chess Final Four every year after joining Division I competition.
In addition, Texas Tech also won two individual national championships.
The first came from Texas Tech Grandmaster Denes Boros, a junior from Hungary, who scored 5-1 to tie for first on Board 3 with Grandmaster Axel Bachmann of the University of Texas-Brownsville and Grandmaster Julio Sadorra of the University of Texas-Dallas.
Texas Tech Grandmaster Andre Diamand, a sophomore from Brazil, claimed the second national title, scoring 5.5-.0.5 as the top finisher on Board 4.
Texas Tech will be joined in the College Chess Final Four by the University of Texas-Dallas, University of Maryland-Baltimore County and New York University.
