Sunset High School’s varsity chess team was co-champion, with Portland’s Grant High School, of the state tournament sponsored by the Oregon High School Chess Team Association held in late February at Clackamas High School. Sunset’s junior varsity team also emerged on top for the fifth time in as many years, and the school’s open division team took third place.

The teams included students from Sunset as well as from Meadow Park Middle School. Though all varsity team members must attend the high school they represent, junior varsity and open team members can include students from middle schools feeding into the high school.

According to Dan Sharp, parent of varsity team captain Austin Sharp, the results reflect each member’s dedication. “They take lessons with a chess master, and they put in many hours at chess club, playing on their own and competing in one- and two-day tournaments all year,” Sharp said.
