Four Fairview students earn first place in Michigan Elementary Team tourney

Four Fairview Elementary School students carried a shiny trophy from room to room to share the news with classmates.

Their careful moves on the chess board Saturday earned them a first place title at the 2007 Michigan Elementary Team Championship.

It’s a first for the Capital City and, with proof that Lansing kids can top 30 teams, a big promotion for the school district’s Got Chess? program.

Fairview is the most advanced building, with its third-graders taking chess lessons for the last three years. But seven other Lansing elementary schools are now teaching the academic-enhancing game this year.
